Any pump that says Diesel for fuel, and any pump or jug that says DEF. There’s no magic fuel or place to fill up.

 

I appreciate it, there's so much conversation about all that stuff. Does the date on the DEF really matter? I've seen conversations about this, but they weren't completely clear.

 

Truck stops will usually have fresh. Turn over is high.

From the factory, properly stored and sealed, DEF could last up to 3 years according to what I have read, minus time for shipping and display before purchase you should be good for about 2 years+ if stored properly (sealed out of sunlight and heat), but it is always advised to get the freshest you can if possible. I have had DEF for over a year kept in a cool area (about 60F) and have had no issues so far, my iDash says concentration is still 32%, and I don't go through much so it sits in the tank for a long time and I always fill back up at the halfway point, much like my fuel tank I want my pumps and any associated equipment submerged and cooled by the fluid in the tank. IMHO, YMMV.

 

My only suggestion would be to not buy Platinum Blue Def. I put that in my truck and got all kinds of Def quality issue warnings. Switched to buying the cheapest and freshest stuff I can find and never had an issue again. Others have had same issue with Platinum Blue Def as well.

It will say in your owners manual, but if it's a 1500 it should be 5.3 gallon tank, so if the bars are half gone (I wait until an extra bar disappears, I don't want to have a spillover) it should hold 2.5 gallons

 

Based on this from my manual is why I wait until 5 bars are gone to put in a 2.5 gallon jug.

Make sure the green handle you grab is really hooked to the diesel pump. Some have been burned.

 

That is some solid advice right there, why any station would use a green cover on anything but diesel is beyond me, but some do.

 

My thoughts black for gas, yellow for corn, green for road diesel & red for offroad diesel.

 

Both my daughters have diesels and refuse to drive the wife's Subaru out of fear of putting diesel in it. At least thats what they tell her.

Costco in Oxnard or Simi Valley for diesel - as they have quick turnover. You want to use a fuel station that gets frequent fill ups as diesel that sits for a while produces condensation - which equals water. Water is no bueno for diesel fuel systems. As far as DEF I use factory AC Delco as it’s cheap insurance for DEF injector system.
