When heater quits do they put new tank with heater installed due to to possibly contamination? Or use old tank?
I could’ve swore I read they were putting new tanks in as 1 unit due to too many 9th inj going out after heater only install.
Tech didn’t want to hear that n said they drain tank and put fresh in .BS cause they didn’t drain it.So any dirt from removing heater could contaminate fluid.

My DEF tank pump was replaced two weeks ago under warranty with about 66k miles on the clock. No warning no nothing the dash just lit up "Service Emissions System" with a mile count down to get it done or speed limited to 65 mph.

I am currently working with a shop to delete the trucks DEF, DPF and turn off EGR with a stock tune. No high performance for me just need the troublesome emissions stuff out of my life for good. Only problem I have had from the truck so far is emissions. Ordered a pipe a week ago and have not heard back from them. However they told me up front due to recent epa crackdowns it may take a little longer than usual to get the pipe.

I have had the heater replaced twice. The first time they replaced the tank and heater. I believe but not certain that GM didn't have the heater as a separate part. Possibly GM at the time covered the whole cost and the second time possibly GM for reimbursement to the dealer GM stipulated to replace only the heater unit. Anyhow both times it was GM extended warranty coverage.

Recently, about 2 weeks ago the DIC message, poor DEF quality flashed up. I thought oh no what now. The tank wasn't empty. I filled it up, maybe less than a quart I had to add. After driving a while the DIC message went away. Sounds like that is a PITA to determine the cause if the message stays. Could be any number of reasons so it has to be diagnosed.

Funny thing even the service writer hinted at getting rid of that crap. He would have given me a name of a place to do it if I wanted it done. He said many customers have done a delete. They just didn't want to have to deal with DEF issues again. I don't remember if he said they leave all that on and disable it or remove it all. I said yeah about the time I do that they will pass a law that you can't trade it in deleted.

Just had my heater replaced in my '13. I had an issue with a high idle that turned out to be the injector for the regeneration so both things were covered under the 10yr 120k extended warranty on the emissions equipment. I never get that lucky.... It was short lived, 3 days later I have a kidney stone. That's more like my luck.

I had a 11mm kidney stone. The ER doctor said I don't think you will be passing that one. I was like give me about 50 syringes of that pain killer to take home. I had lithotripsy done to break it up. Felt like pi$$ing sand after that.

About a year later I had a urinary track infection that went septic. Found out I had prostate stones along with an enlarged prostate. Lucky me I came with a 3 lobe prostate, normal is 2. I am more sexy I told a friend. Enlarged prostate I take flowmax and finesteride and now I have gone from a size B cup tits to a D. Been thinking about doing a spread for Playgirl. LOL

I’ve got a 2016 Duramax lml With 66,000 miles. I’ve got a p140b code and a p049d code showing at the same time. Clear it it doesn’t show back up on the same drive until I turn it off then back on again. But occasionally it’ll throw a nox code. It does sound like I got a bit of a tick sound. Especially when I’m at a dead stop and Accelerate, sounds nearly like it’s about to cut off sometimes. Went into regen, everything ran fine, and when I stopped at the house put my truck in park the truck started to surge pretty badly. Jumping from 640 rpm to close to 800 repetitively.I’m getting a delete tune, and egr delete and def delete Tuesday. I’m just hoping that’ll fix my issue

2012 GMC 2500HD Denali with the 6.6L diesel.

Jun 2014 @ 25,225 mi: New to me.
Apr 2017 @ 49,634 mi: MIL and Service Exhaust Fluid System message. Diagnosed as Reduction sensor open. Replaced DEF sensor unit (23379348). Covered under warranty.
Oct 2019 @ 65,264 mi: MIL light. Replaced 5 glow plugs under special warranty.
Feb 2020 @ 61,900 mi: DEF Quality Poor. UGH

Current work performed that did not resolve the issue:
1. First failed attempt: Replaced DEF (I always use Peak or O'Reilly ISO-22241-1 fluid so this seemed suspect)
2. Second failed attempt: Replace the DEF injector ~$1000
3. Third failed attempt: Replace the Engine Thermostats $800

Proposed next steps:
Replace the emissions control computer ~$800
Replace the SCR ~$3000

I've got them on hold right now while I consider next steps. They assure me they have spent a lot of time on the phone with GM diesel techs. I do not want to continue paying for them to guess what it may be. It seems like you should be able to test things prior to replacing them to diagnose where the real problem is. After reading a lot here I am curious why they haven't replaced any NOx sensors. When I asked they assured me they had checked their performance.

Any advice? (other than deleting the system, which I cannot do in my state/county) Does that GM Customer Service person still participate in this forum?

Thanks,

Jason

I won't have to participate in this thread anymore after yesterday. Finally all my parts arrived monday and I had it done yesterday.

Deleted the DPF, CAT, DEF, closed off EGR and added the +40 hp tow tune through Ez-lynk. 4" straight pipe from 3 bolt down pipe up to the stock over the axle tailpipe. Truck looks 100% stock under the hood and out the back. Not loud at all but you'd know it is deleted on crank up.

All it took was one emissions dash lit up back in january and I was fed up with the mess. Left 1 year of warranty on the table but sometimes you just have to move on.

I deleted the DPF and EGR on my LMM. No DEF to worry about. Honestly will all the issues everyone is having with this emission crap I will run my LMM till the wheels fall off. Even the new L5Ps are having issues. If I ever get a newer truck I will probably go back to gas. Love the power of the diesel but this emission stuff is not worth it anymore. Damn near impossible to delete anything on the L5Ps. Dean

Pretty much have the same mentality now that my LML has been deleted and I had to replace the head gaskets last year and did ARP studs. Drive on!

Wrapping up my story, hopefully not just for now...

The dealer replaced one of the NOx sensors and did a service regen multiple times until the DEF quality poor warning went away. They discounted my bill down to the original $1800 I'd already agreed to pay and I also got an alignment and key reprogrammed at that price. A nice gesture, but doesn't take the sting out of paying to replace things I don't think were wrong. Dealer had the vehicle almost 2 weeks.

To correct my mileage above... truck has 69,592 miles.

Between this and the chronic dash cracking issue, I'll likely consider a newer gas replacement. Maybe a 6.2L 1500 with the max towing package since that will handle what I do.

I'd encourage anyone going through this to push their dealer to spend time investigating the NOx sensors. Mine had no code pointing to them but I am convinced that is what the problem actually was. If anyone reads thinks differently I'd like to hear so I am better prepared if there is a next time.

These were two of the parts on mine as well. That NOx sensor was the last thing they did on mine that I believe finally fixed the original issue.

I have a 2013 3500 drw 4x4, the def heater went out at like 130k miles I think, I just replaced it myself for like 150$ for the part? The truck now has 207k miles and no issues with the def or def tank related parts.
