So I'm a bit picky on doing maintenance on my truck which is a 2004 2500hd lly 4x4 and I was trying to be smart and ordered a cat fuel filter adapter and filter as I've heard extremely good things about them and the cheap price was a bonus. As I went to install it I realized that there wasn't a place for my water fuel separator which I don't know how I looked hat over. Anyways I don't have a lift pump or anything else on this truck and was wondering if it's ok to run without a water fuel separator or if I need to go back to the Baldwin fuel filters? If you have an opinion it would be nice to hear as well as why. Thanks in advance.

OEM filter is the way to go. I would see if you can return or sell it (CAT filter and adapter) and buy a couple of OEM filters.

Have ya thought about adding extra filtration?
1-14 thread filter bases are inexpensive (most all filter mfrs offer one). You could add an aux FWS filter & base for less than half the cost of the adapter up front.

And since you're there, it wouldn't be much more of a task to plumb in a small pump to catch that water free fuel and push it forward.

The aux filter (with an easy access drain) catching the big stuff, along with the positive pressure forward (better use of full media), you could see 2-3 times the filter life up front, greatly reducing your filter maintenance co$ts overall.

That's an investment in better fuel protection that quickly pays off in a short time.

Just some ideas I threw together a while back....

Hook'em_Horns I have already thought about adding a primary filter/ water separator. I am a sucker though as far as how much I hate removing factory equipment so going back to stock is tempting. I have researched a little and have come up with a filter head and filter that I think would be a great primary filter setup. I am worried though that having two filters and no lift pump will make the cp3 pump work harder than need be. Have any opinions on this? I attached pictures of the filter head and filter.

Like he said, "And since you're there, it wouldn't be much more of a task to plumb in a small pump to catch that water free fuel and push it forward." Hookem's setup is VERY nice. JUST DO IT!

A lift pump with additional filtration is likely the best thing you can do for your diesel truck for reliability. Fuel tank, then filter, then pump and the pump will last forever.
