Diesel Fuel in Def tank.

My "Service Exhaust Fluid System, See Owners Manual" message came on my dashboard.
I called to closed Chevy Dealer and they advised me to get my 2016 - Chevy Express Van, in right away.
After the dealer checked it out, they said I had a bad Def fluid system heater. And they would replace it under warranty.
They ordered a new part the next day and removed the Def tank to replace and found that diesel fuel was in the Def tank. Because of the diesel fuel in the Def tank, all this work was not covered under the warranty. I am the only person who puts fuel or Def in the tanks. I know this is impossible to have happen. I asked for a sample of the Def from the dirty tank, and it was "accidentally" thrown out.
Has anyone else had this happen? Please help, something is very fishy here.

I would imagine it would be difficult at best to use the diesel nozzle to get fuel in the def filler? Seems like you would have to kind of shoot the diesel in their because the nozzle wouldn't fit--right? Point being.. I feel like you would know if you fudged this up as it would make a mess.

Boise Rob, thanks for the reply. The dealer hosed me on heater exchange. Which they said was covered under warranty. Then trying to blame me saying I put diesel I Def tank.
wonder who I should contact at GM?
The only other possibility is what I ran into when I was a tech rep for a major aviation manufacturer. New diesel fueling truck naturally run with DEF tanks on them. There is an option for aircraft jet fuel to mix in PRIST. It is an additive that help prevent damage from water in the tanks and icing fuel issues. There have been reported cases where line service people have put DEF in the PRIST injection tank. The reason I bring this up is if you get DEF from sealed sources or from a station that has a separate DEF pump. I could see someone at a gas station accidentally putting diesel in the DEF holding tanks. Just an idea. Dean

I had this exact issue traveling through SLC in a LML with 20k miles on it. Just like you, we only put in boxes of def, there's no way diesel has been put in the def tube under the hood. I laughed at that stupidity. They wanted to replace at $4500 (this was in 2016). Let's just say that after 7 days of this game and hotels bills adding up, I ended up with an alternate solution and decided that any warranty on emissions would not be stood behind. There was sawzall use in the hotel parking lot and a reprogram. It ran better than ever after that.

In your case, I'd find someone else to work on it. I'm sure someone else can be more specific, but I've found that most of the time it's something stupid like a sensor or wire. The dealer just wants your money.

The onus is on the dealer to prove that it's not a warranty claim, rather than on you to prove that it is.
Their convenient disposal of the supposedly tainted DEF contents smells of Ratus Ratus.
Without clear evidence of the fluid being tainted, the dealer does not have a leg to stand on

Google 'GM warranty phone number' for the phone number to call:
