Engine just died... no fuel getting to the engine

I was driving and the engine just died. Acted like it ran out of fuel. Had it towed home now trying to figure out what to test and how. Its not the batteries or alternator. My knowledge of diesels isnt as great as gas vehicles. I assume there is not just a fuel pressure port that i can hook up a gauge too? So far i have opened the bleed screw on the low pressure pump and primed it. No fuel came out so I assume that means no fuel is goin to the filter. Any one got any ideas? Fuel filter is under 20k miles, thats a rough estimate.

Possible the fuel pick-up tube is cracked-- or the top of the tank tube is rusted through- I see you are in Rust Belt-- Michigan--

Add 5 gallons to the tank see if you can prime it then.

The duramax engine sucks fuel from the tank. U could have an air leak causing it to stall. Also if the hole is in the right location u won't see it leak. And on top of the tank it will leak there but all the dirt and shit will soak up the fuel and won't leak Much. A mirror and a flash light will be able to see if it's leaking there. Also open the bleeder scree make sure fuel filter is full. Then close the primer and pump it so it's rock hard and look at the top of filter head for a leak

I checked the top off the tank dry as a bone and followed the lines and didnt see any hint of diesel. Im about to take the fuel filter off but i already took the bleeder off and pumped it and nothing come out and the pressure did not build (it didnt get harder to pump)

That is the Water In Fuel Sensor [WIF] they are junk and don't always work as designed-- NO, it will not cause a problem or set codes if the wire is broken, as long as it is not shorted. Many just delete it.

Do as I said-- PUT SOME FUEL IN THE TANK, then try to prime it.

You lost prime, likely culprit is fuel filter head. Seals in there will go out.

If you add fuel, and try to prime it, that can eliminate the part of the no-start condition.

The fuel gauge is not an instrument-- just a thinge with a pointer-- and many times they are wrong.

Also being in Michigan-- you could have gelled fuel. Can you put it in a warm garage.

It's really easy. Just taken your time and take pictures. Remember everything doesn't need to be very tight.
