I'd say that with a "missing" tab, it will be stuck on Empty. Initially, mine bounced all over, but very soon afterwards, it just read 0. I had a "low Fuel" message, an Empty fuel reading, and a warning/test orange light on the fuel guage.

Sounds like the parts for my 2005 are slightly different than in 2001-4, as my part with the float assy and reostat ( ACDelco SK 1221 ) just clips on to the side of the assembly inside the tank.

I'm going for it

My 01' is doing the same thing. I was trying to try and figure out if I should pull the bed, drop the tank, replace the whole sending unit or what. Your guys info is great! Monstermax I am going to take your advice and try your method. Looks like a great idea. I will let you know how it goes. The money I save will pay for the steel to build my lift for the bed. Much appreciated.

Got home late from work but I just pulled the bed, popped the fuel sending unit out and it's laid out for finishing in the am. Got the dorman part last night for $31! WAAAYYYY cheaper. I will let you guys know how the install works tomorrow after I finish it up but I have no doubt.

Thanks again.

HI all been watching this thread for about a week and decided to check my sender out. I work as an auto tech and was waiting untill I had a donor sender from another chevy (thinking along the lines of monstermax to keep it cheap). Well I had a vehicle with a bad pump come inand kept the sender with the thoughts of installing it this weekend. It took about 15 minutes to lift the bed (if you have shop access this is the prefered method) I pulled the sender unit up and to my suprise the float was missing. I had already tested the gauge with a tech II, I plugged the sender back in and swung the arm and it reads just fine. I installed the float from the donor and fixed my problem.
Thanks to those who suggested lifting the bed I would of just dropped the tank but learned something out this that will help me in the future as a tech so again thanks.

Sorry to bring up this post from the dead, but I just wanted to say thanks to Monstermax for this great idea. I fixed my fuel gauge for $20 and it saved me over $200! It is a very simple procedure and I was worried at first that I wouldn't be able to make it work. So if anyone has seen this post and was questioning their ability I just want to say that if I can do it anyone can.

Glad it worked.out for ya bud! I have since done two more myself and my original one is still working like a charm!

The dorman 911-005 kit worked great on my 01. Just have to be careful getting new unit apart, I broke the new one getting the arm off. I cut the plastic from around the outside of the metal clip and epoxied the new one in. I also had to put a screw in the top of the sending unit housing to keep the float from over extending and breaking the little metal arms off the clip.

Bringing this Post back from the dead again. Just got a 2002 LB7 with the same problem going to try this fix and see how it works. Worth a shot if it saves me money thanks for the help monstermax!

2001 not 2002

I fixed mine a couple years ago and it still works just fine. The dorman kit is much cheaper than the factory part.

Look in the DIY section and you will find the dorman part number. you don't have to pull the bed just make sure that your fuel tank is low. It's a bitch with a fuller tank. It took me about 2 hours from start to finish.

My truck needs a new bed so I'm going to wait to fix the sending unit until I get a new bed and just do it between bed swaps. Very glad I found this.

New to the forum, and thinking this might be a solution to my issue with my 2001 2500HD with the 6.6.

Everything I see seems to point that this Dorman part # is for the gas trucks, and not the diesel. Can someone that done this fix confirm that it works for the diesel trucks as well?

Thanks

Greg

Old thread but it helped me a lot when replacing my sender level unit. I did it a week ago and it was waaaay easier than I thought it would be. I loosened the four bed bolts on the passenger side but didn't remove them completely. I removed the fuel filler neck (3 little 7mm bolts) and removed all four bed bolts. I used a floor jack and a 4x4 to lift the bed so I could access the top of the fuel tank. This was much easier than dropping the fuel tank and I didn't need to completely remove the bed.

I ordered the new sender unit on Amazon after cross-referencing the part number on Rock Auto. It was $203 with free shipping. Funny thing is Amazon said this part "will not fit your 2006 2500HD 6.6" but I took a chance knowing it was correct on Rock Auto.

Part number/info- ACDelco MU1228 GM original equipment

I also bought the cheap fuel line tools which worked great.
