I'm looking for a little help. 2018 L5P 180K miles and has a code for number 3 glow plug. Thanks to this forum I found quickly it is best to use a glow plug reamer. I have the OEM plugs in hand but I cannot find the reamer. Seems they are out nation wide. Tried OTC, international, Tillman, you name it.... nothing.

Any ideas or anyone have one they would like to sell? I really don't want to risk breaking the new one off in the cylender but I'm running out of options. I do have the reamer on order through international but they say March at best.

Tying to get a feel for a success rate going at it without the tool and this many miles?

I have read it is not good to leave a dead plug in these engines for too long becuse it builds up even more carbon from not buring off the tip and will snap or get stuck in there. Any truth to that? Can I still drive it alot or you agree I should try to use it as little as possible?

Found out today this is very true. My 2017 L5P has had a engine light on for about 3 years. I have been resetting but now I have the permanent code stored for it & can't remote start. My bad plug was #7. I pulled 5 first & it was effortless. Number 7 was a different story. Could get one click on the ratchet one way & one the other. I put PB on it repeatedly, it would make a high pitch sound everytime it move. After 2 hours of back & forth a click at a time over & over I finally got all the threads out of the head but the glow plug was captured by all the carbon. I kept turning repeatedly while using my finger tips to pull outward. Finally got it out. I called my dealer to get the much needed reamer & instead of making me buy one they loaned me theirs! Outstanding customer relations. I put the new plugs in tomorrow once the holes are reamed.

Ceramic Glow Plug Replacement

Successfully replacing ceramic glow plugs (Fig. 1) in diesel engines requires carefully handling of the plugs and following the proper service procedures in order to prevent potential performance issues.

Here are a few tips on ceramic glow plug replacement on the 1.6L I4 diesel engine (RPO LH7), Duramax 3.0L I6 diesel engine (RPO LM2, LZ0) and Duramax 6.6L V8 diesel engine (RPO L5P, L5D) available in 2017-2019 Cruze; 2017-2024 Silverado 2500/3500, Sierra 2500/3500; 2018-2019 Equinox, Terrain; 2019-2022 Silverado 4500/5500/6500; 2020-2024 Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500; and 2021-2024 Tahoe/Suburban and Yukon models.
  • Measure the resistance of a new glow plug. An open circuit in a glow plug indicates that the glow-plug tip is broken and should not be installed in an engine.
  • Do not install a glow plug into an engine if the glow plug has been dropped.
  • Pull on the tip of a new glow plug before installation. Be sure your hands are clean before handling the glow plug.
  • Always use the EN-52074 Glow Plug Bore Reamer (Fig. 2) when replacing a ceramic glow plug on the 1.6L, 3.0L and 6.6L diesel engines. A glow plug hole bore cleaning tool will remove the soot built up on the inside of the glow plug hole. Once a glow plug is removed, the soot collected in the bore must be removed. Otherwise, the soot could “side load” the new glow plug and induce a premature failure. The only exception to this is when servicing a glow plug on a 2.0L or 2.8L diesel engine.

  • Never use any type of grease or anti-seize compound on a new glow plug. Using any lubricant could lead to over-tightening of the glow plug.
  • When installing a glow plug, make sure that it is in line with the glow-plug hole. Any side load placed on the glow plug could cause a crack in the ceramic, which would lead to premature failure.
  • Do not use power tools to install a glow plug.
  • Do not overtighten a glow plug. An overtightened glow plug could initiate a crack in the ceramic, leading to premature failure.

Just a fallow up from my original post. The tool came in finally with the PN GM-52074 printed on it. I had been waiting since early Jan. I’m not sure if they have more of them ready to ship or not. I suggest buying one before your glow plugs give out, so your not forced with a decision to go at it without or wait for the tool.

I bought the tool from International for $122.40. + shipping and tax came to $142.64

FYI, I did not do any glow plug re-learn. Put the new one in and started it up, no check engine light, (No issues since I installed a few weeks ago, and its been cold!)

In case LBZ folks are on this thread, it appears your tool is still priced much higher. The year 2016-25 one is the lower price.
