Please read my original request for information. I did not request specifications or information on diesel fuel or biodiesel.
- Since I just ordered the truck and the earliest expected delivery date is late June 07, it would be reasonable to assume that I do not have a Duramax Diesel Engine Owner's Manual Supplement!
- I have spoken to several knowledgeable individuals at my dealership, however they are not the policy makers or stewards of the GM Warranty, so as helpful as they were they were not able to answer my questions.
- The person who is in the best position to address my concerns will probably be someone that is knowledgeable with the content, policy and limitations specified in the Warranty, addressing my questions on lubricity, fuel additives and synthetic oil.
I appreciate that you may not have the answers to my questions, therefore it would make sense to pass this information to your supervisor who in turn can direct someone with the answers to deal with the matter.
I am a subscriber to a Duramax Users Forum (US/CDN) and many of them would like to hear answers from GM, to my questions, so I will be posting these emails.
Collectively as a group, we spent a lot of $$$ on GM Duramax trucks and we would like to preserve our investments.
Looking forward to specific answers.

In the US, I know for a fact that GM cant tell you what brand of oil you can and cant run, they can only provide a minimum requirement specification, such as "oil must meet API cc/cd specification" and recommended grade for ambient temp in your area. Thanks to the Magnusson-Moss warranty act if the dealer requires you to use a consumable product like the factory brand oil to maintain your warranty the dealer must provide it to you free of cost....

But in Canada I know nothing. I would immediately install a bypass filter setup when I got it home and swap to Amsoil 100% synthetic oil, after the first oil change if it was mine. :gearjamin

I've heard about that bypass filter thing a couple of times now. Can someone give me a quick explanation of it?

The bypass filter does a few things when installed properly and heres the basic rundown:
First: It installs a full flow filter in place of the original filter (which the OEMs will open up and bypass unfiltered oil to the engine when the oil pressure is too high, such as cold starts, the full flow doesnt rarely ever bypass) the full flow uses a better media to allow more flow of oil without "opening up" when the deltaP (or differential) is too high for an OEM.
Second: There is the actual "bypass" filter which is usually remote mounted and tapped into the pressure gallery and returns to the sump that has a very small micron rating to trap all the unwanted particulates that pass thru the normal filtration, and eventually pass into the "bypass" filter. That allows the flow thru the "tight" filter without starving full flow to the engine.
These setups are very effective at increasing engine service life because your oil is so much cleaner, and a byproduct of it is that your oil also lasts longer. It is an expensive initial investment, usually @ 250.00 for the kit plus installation. But it is well worth it for anyone expecting to keep their rig for a while.

The Bypass filter is about the best preventive maintenance you can do for your motor. Synthetic or Dino oil, a Bypass filter will keep it clean longer.
