Ok so I cant afford a duramax but i have a 1993 6.5 turbo mechanical injection system and i cant find the problem.
-truck is hard to start in all weather
-truck smokes greyish white smoke at start up
-truck has no power when throttle mashed
-truck will acccelerate slowly if throttle is slowly mashed
-truck luggs down if you try to pass car
-recently died and failed to start for 12 hours
-truck surges in reverse (sometimes)

All the symptoms point to pmd but as you know 1993 does not have one right. It is mechanical? Ok so here's what happened.

I got off work Here in Texas at 315am started truck up with no problem left work and got about a hundred yards and the trucked stopped. I tried to wiggle wires and tap things but no luck. I loosened the nut on the fuel filter and it hissed like it had alot of pressure but no diesel came out. I had it towed home and the next mornin tried to start it again with no luck. I crawled back under the hood to show my dad the massive air pressure but this time diesel went everywhere. Could this mean a leak in air or the pump wasn;t working the night before? Anyway i also unplugged the glow plug relay module and when i plugged them back in it started anfd has not died yet. i still fear i have a problem and would like some help. The truck still has a ll the sypmtoms above but now it starts. Any answers beside Injection Pump!! maybe faulty connections air leaks etc etc... thanks for all the help.

The lift pump referances Oil pressure to run....no oil pressure, it quits running. SOOO....the sending unit that its using could be bad.....also the lift pump could be bad. ALSO sounds like you have a bad vaccum pump/line to the Waist Gaite. Go mechanical conversion....it takes that issue out for good. Best thing to do is see if you are getting fuel pressure....if not...test for power at the lift pump on the rail.....if not....might need an OPSU. BUT i have VERY limited knowledge on this truck..i have worked on a few........not the easiest to wrench on.....what part of Texas....i used to live in Gainesville until last month......

I recently set out on a new glow plug relay switch-module but during the swap I noticed that there were three glow plug wires that were completely fried just hanging on by grease. I replaced them and a new fuel filter, air cleaner, straight pipe the exhaust and installed 1/0 battery cables along with new grounding straps. I dont know what caused the truck to act up but it now runs great with a little stall or sputter here and there. I think the injectors my need replacing. the Injection pump is all manual they didnt have pmd or and electronics except for one pink wire in 1993.
i'm late but, true i'm a ford guy but reguardless, did you test the glow plug's? white smoke usualy means bad g.p.'s. also bad batteries can cause all kinds of wiered thing's. cables to.

I know exactly what the problem is...it's a chevy. Swap in a 12valve cummins and you'll have it going fast in no time
