Headlight Switch, or is it just me???

Recently the fact that my headlights stay on all the time (at night) started making me wonder... I understand that they headlights are controlled by a light sensor on my year so that (when the E-brake is off, and when the light sensor detects low light levels) the lights will remain on, but wouldn't there be an override switch???

I know that my wife's 05' Avalanche has the over ride switch in hers, but is there some way I can do the same to mine, can I put a newer switch in mine?

I say recently because I am getting to work these days about 0500 and the gate guards have made several comments about my HID's being bright and that I need to turn off the headlights when approaching the gate. They don't believe me when I tell them that I cannot turn them off, until I show them and its a big PITA. Any recommendations?

Thanks!

On the E-brake assembly there is a single wire that goes to a grounding switch, it grounds the wire when you apply the E-brake. You could scotch lock a wire to it and route it to a simple on/off switch, with the other terminal going to a ground. When you want to kill the lights at night flip the switch (it will illimunate the E-brake light) and it would cost you under $5.00.

HUH, that is a great idea, wonder if the e-brake chime will keep going off?

yeah you push the dome override button a bunch of times and it will do it too i think
I read that in the owners manual, and I tried that but I couldn't get it to work???

Thanks for the ideas!

Exactly; on my 02 Z71 I just pressed the dome override 4 times and it would chime indicating the change from auto to manual and vice versa.

Well NO DICE, on BOTH options. wtf:

I went out and tested the dome light over ride and that option does not work on my truck... I don't know if it was because it was delivered in Canada and they have different regs, or if the light switch is broken but I need to figure that out.

On the E-brake ground switch: That is also a no-go because for the switch idea to work it would have to be flipped all the time (it only works when you have the switch applied before you start the vehicle, and it does activate the chime once you are driving like 10 MPH...)

I guess I will see how much a light switch costs and replace to see if that fixes the problem, thanks for the input everyone!

There is nothing wrong with your light switch. Trucks shipped in Canada don't have the option to turn the lights off when driving. I have heard that you can take it to a dealer and have them change it to a US spec, which may enable you to turn them off?
Or you can try that resistor mod for the light sensor.

Well at least I am not going crazy then! Thank you for the info

Can't switch it over to parking lights only when you approach the gate?
That is correct, every morning the guards look at me like I am an A-hole, and the one that ask me to dim my lights never believe me that they will not turn off...

I have a Canadian truck, too. Headlights will be on any time the ignition is ON at night. The only way to fix this is to do the famous auto headlight mod.

I did the auto headlight mod and added a switch so I can flip it back to factory. Now it works the way it's supposed to.

Here's a thread about how to do it: Diesel Place : Chevrolet and GMC Diesel Truck Forums

I include a step-by-step in this post. See post #15: Canadian Auto Headlight Disable - Revisited - Page 2 - Diesel Place : Chevrolet and GMC Diesel Truck Forums
This is Awesome, I will look into this for next weekends project. Thanks again!

hahaha this just happened to me today. The Officer told me to turn my lights off and I'm like I can't.

The guards will have to deal with it. Your truck is not modified from stock, so nothing they can do about it. Grumble and be on the way.

At our astronomical (telescope) events, vehicles with headlights and parking lamps that cannot be turned off are not allowed. Hence, the headlight fix. Even a split second of headlamps will ruin everybody's night vision for 20 minutes, so even temporary disable after starting the vehicle isn't sufficient.

Manufacturers need to give owners a way to disable auto headlamps - permanently.

Vehicles are a *must* - viewing venues are often 50 to 100 miles away from any town or city. Light discipline is imposed from sunset to sunrise.

Pretty much all astronomers understand this, so it hasn't been much of a problem.
