I guys, I just got my first Duramax. It's a 2006 GMC Sierra 2500. I got it from the auction in MO. My buddy owns a dealership, so he was able to get it for me. He took it to get it smogged, and it did not pass. This is what the smog report said in the comments.

EGR removed, no EO for air intake,no catalytic converter, no EO # for performance tuner, Black smoke during BAR Snap Test.

ALSO: Missfire

So i did not know that the truck wasn't stock, nor did my buddy.

If i knew it has this stuff on it, I would have taken the Tuner and KNN intake off before the smog. If anymore can help with some other issues, that would be great. Thanks guys.

Caveat emptor, buyer beware, about your best option is to send the truck out of state to a new auction. Or spend the $$$, to put it back to stock.

Sell it in a free state. Would be a shame to put all that emissions crap back on the truck.

even if you had pulled the tuner and the intake off before smog they would still have caught the missing cat and egr.

unfortunately your options in this situation are to either repair the truck and return it to its factory state, or see if a few bills falling on the floor might help pass the truck.

edit, just noticed your name.... and i can assume i know what state we are registering this in.... my condolences.

yup, even some of the 01 trucks had an EGR on them if they were built to California specifications. the 06 should have a cat and egr, but no DPF or urea.
Register it in a county in your state that doesn't do emissions if this exist in any of your counties in your state.
Looking at your airfilter in your pictures, that needs to be trashed, get a new airfilter.
K & N is the worse choice for a turbo diesel, the filters are already a little to thin then they thin out even more overtime allowing to much airflow which usually leads to the P0101 code.

I feel your pain. My last two smogs I initially failed. One for the EGR readiness check which I had to go back to 100% stock. And this time I had put on the S&B turbo mouthpiece which doesn’t have an EO executive order. I would say your two biggest issues are with the cat and the EGR. Is the EGR just turned off in the tuner or is it removed altogether? Can’t tell from the pics what brand air intake you have but you can check the website to see if it is CARB legal in California. I would think the edge is carb legal.
Sorry, but your buddy should have known to confirm details , if he owns a dealer....
Shoot I wish I saw that you wanted to trade. I have already bought a lot of the parts on eBay.
Good news, I called KNN, and they warrantied my filter. I use to sell them, so I know they are really good about just giving u new one. I’m also in the process of getting the carb sticker from them. I was able to buy a EGR/cooler on eBay and the other tube that goes to the egr. It’s going to be a process, but I’m going to have to turn it back to stock.

That is not true. I've got multiple people around here running K&N on their tuned Duramaxes and Powerjokes and Cummins with no issues. You have to install them CORRECTLY and NOT over oil them. Something not very many of you gearheads seem to know how to do, obviously given the issues you're encountering. Now- If you are pushing 600HP with massive massive air intake then yeah, a stock K&N filter is not going to cut it. But for factory stock with some decent tunes they work fine. K&N stands behind their products as well and have engineers and designers that know their crap.
No offense. I just get tired of the bad rap a few yahoos out there give K&N when they don't know how to use it correctly. I've run K&N products in 2 prior Duramaxes, and several cars. They worked great. Their filtering does a good job as well. K&N is the only cold air intake I will use. I also use their drop in filters for existing stock filter boxes.
I’m not going to get in a pissing match, but I’ve experienced on 2 of our service truck where the
K & N eventually coming apart trash out the turbos.
IMPO K & N’s are only good for a gasser not a turbo diesel with way higher MAF g/s flow.
There’s plenty of members that eventually ran into issues with the K & N.
Search, oh ya, you already have.

I only ask this because you are making an unsubstantiated argument that is widely disagreed with. What are you using to evaluate that this filter is "working great".

Just because the engine doesn't seize does not mean the filter is working well. Have you taken the engines apart to look at scoring on the cylinder walls, or done any flow tests on the intake to back up that statement?

The issue with oil coating the MAF and what not i agree is poor maintenance and over oiling of the element, but what quantitative data shows this filter is better than a paper filter? The manufacturer (paper or otherwise) really cant be trusted as there testing is going to be designed to maximize the results of there element.

Im not trying to be difficult here, im just asking for information because you are doing exactly the same thing as the anti KN guys here, just in the opposite direction. "i believe blah, because no reasons besides i said so"

I feel like the oiled filters are a gimmick, there a pain in the butt to clean dry and oil and i think they are just a headache overall regardless of there efficiency, but that's my opinion. They may filter very well, but if i have to either have 2 filters, of have the truck down for a whole day while the filter dries, that's just not useful to me.

Yeah.... that is cool if you want to run them, do your thing.

I personally trust the proven data that shows you are paying more for worse filtration, in comparison to numerous other filter types available.

Do K&Ns work? Yes.
Are they the best filtration option? No.
Are they the best filtration in their price range? No.
Can you get better filtration from a cheaper filter? Yes.
Can you get reusable filters that don't require oil, and provide better filtration, for less money? Yes.
Is it such a big big deal I need to rush out and replace the K&N my truck came with when I bought it? No.
If I need a new filter, will I buy a K&N for my duramax? No.

There are opinions, there is data, and there is reality. K&N's wont turn your truck into a steamy pile of crap. But you are paying more for less. It is proven.

As a California resident, I feel your pain. I recently failed the readiness monitor portion of the test. All because the high idle/PTO switch was left on, which I never ever turn off because it turns the function off when not in park or the first time you hit the brake pedal.

Not sure where in Cali you are, but I am up just above Auburn in Norcal. If you run into any issues and are near, give me a shout. I have a tech 2 and know these trucks in and out. A few local shops call me if they run into a duramax stumper question.
On cleaning and dry time, I've mentioned this many times, have 2 filters one cleaned dried and oiled ready to install.
When it’s time to change filters a quick R & R, then clean allowing natural drying time then oil at your leisure time put it in its box ready to swap out the next time.
They’re not all that costly cutting way down on the waiting to get back on the road.
