HID Retrofit - the right way to do it

I just completed a projector retrofit of my NBS Silverado's headlights. I really don't care for simply sticking the HIDs in the stock lights, it's inconsiderate to other drivers and draws too much attention to what you're doing.

Total project cost $150

Here's how I did it -

I used Morimoto mini Bi-xenon projectors from the Retrofit Source. These are made for HID bulbs and fit perfectly in the stock housing with some minor trimming of the bulb socket. I didn't buy ballasts as I had a few sets laying around. Took around 3 hours and the results are above expectations. These are bi-xenon, meaning there is a solenoid inside the projector that flips down when you turn on your brights - so you've now got 4 hi-beams :)

NO glare, clean cut-off, and nobody flashes their brights at you.

Bi-xenon: Morimoto Mini H1 4.1 - HID Projectors from The Retrofit Source Inc

Here's a good guide for how to do it - I don't necessarily endorse the way they hack open the lights, use whatever works for you.

This is my ranch, so I apologize for not having white lines on the road. The furthest rock on the left side is roughly 100 yards away. NO ONE flashes me with this setup.

First pic, from inside the truck:

Second pic, from outside the truck standing even with the front of the grill:

Third, shot from the side. No flare or glare and all the light is going forward.

Last pic, looking back at the truck. Notice there is no glare (there is some, but this is a function of the camera):

When you hit the brights, the HID's are bi-xenon so the shutters drop out and remove the cutoff. Combined with the high beams it totally washes out the picture, so I didn't post it.

This is clean, pointed light. I rest my case.

I like how my fog lights scatter the light. and its not because im a "forum moron on HID lighting" like ben so ignorantly put it. Where I live there is abundance of deer, and i dont have to drive with them on all the time either.

I havent messed with my housings for my other lights, but i dont drive my truck everyday.

Props on a clean setup though

Its funny how a few people try to decide for the masses. Then how the few decide said people are morons.

There are many types of light applications: IE laser's, and spotlights. Limiting yourself to only one possible solution to many problems is naive at best. Ive rode in many vehicle's with really nice projector's. I have an understanding of what they should look like. In my particular situation, where I live has wide roads, and a very large deer population.

My friend totaled out his 08 TT IS250 last month from a deer. It is my opinion that I have much better peripheral vision with stock lenses, and the reward far outweighs the risk of pissing someone off. Which ill add hasn't happened in over a year since installation.

Would these same projectors fit in an OBS style stock housing?

So did some testing and pics are coming. First a little explanation of what I did. I have a set of retrofit projectors that I am presently trying to fit in fogs (not real easy fit by the way). Don't know manufacturer and couldn't find receipt. Paid around $120 though. I set the light up pointing at inside of garage door about 10-12 feet away. I then took 3 pic of the HID; all the way in, about 1/8 out and 1/4 out. Tried to use gasket about that thick but may or may not be exact. I then took pics of my projector headlight at same distance with bulb inserted completely. Different type bulb in headlight but same 6k 25 watt system. I didn't have a bulb any longer than the H7 so I didn't place a bulb too far in the retrofit projector and with H3 type in headlight there was no way of placing the bulb in too far without destroying headlight. So results:

So it appears I don't know what the hell I am talking about. The length does appear to affect the light severely if the bulb is short. Now why is my headlight so concentrated? Don't know, the bulbs are from same company. I venture to say the H7s are not in far enough, maybe. May try to shave some off the housing and see if I can get them in a little more and see what they look like. The headlights shoot a pretty wide beam even though they are that concentrated at 10-12 feet. I would hate for the fogs to be so wide I can't use them. I am waiting on the completion of fogs before I take pics of the truck lights pointing against wall. Oh and just for informative purposes, I have 3 different type of HID's and all three of the little gas bulbs (area were lights up) line up within 1/16" of normal bulb element.

Just got my Morimoto H1 projectors today...looking forward to starting working on putting them in!

First I'd like to say I've enjoyed this thread. Really highlights some ignorant views of folks who think they have nice HID's(speaking to those of you without projectors). I see this same attitude here with many members who don't understand oil(lubricants in general) but still spew misinformation to members who are here to learn. Always gotta be some hayseed hillbilly who thinks they are a resident "expert" because they own a 50k truck. So laughable.

To the OP, what did you use to open the housings? Also, how did you re seal? Thanks and beautiful results. Exactly how HID's should look. I'm looking forward to this project here in the next few weeks. Just replaced my front end with a 2012 bumper and grille. Itching for another project!

Some people in here went full retard explaining why their HID setups are fine.

You NEVER go full retard!

He could mean its scattered worse than stock. Still brighter than stock, but not focused like stock

sub'd .Old thread bump, but thanks for this. Im really suprised about reading all those post and how so many guys here dont understand how much better having true projecotrs w/ HID are over stock housings. Projectors provide the best furthest and widest output. The guys who complained about being worried about deers, projectors pwn deers lol. Now to find one for a sierra

Great thread and pics! Aside from the pics showing that those projectors produce a much brighter and clearer pattern, I think they would look great with the stock reflectors painted black behind them. This will be my next mod on both my Duramaxs

This is a great looking project and very helpful tutorial. I agree with your posts in another thread about there not being any quality projector headlight assemblies out there, I have looked everywhere. I am really looking forward to doing this but I have a quick question for you. I plan to do both highs and lows, and I see 2 ways to go about it. Either put bi-xenon projectors such as the fx-r 3.0 in both high and low as I have it set up for quad beams already, or keep them separate and basically do exactly what you did but with high beams also. Do you recall if there are separate aiming screws for both high and low beams or do you move both at once? I have not taken the assemblies out yet so I am not sure, but I would forsee this being a problem if I went the first route.

what year truck do you have? Fx-r is a pretty big projector, don't think it can fit in obs trucks.

How could i have not seen this thread before, it is epic.

People who know nothing about projectors and proper HID setups should not be posting ignorant views and thoughts of how their DDM Tuning HIDs in a factory housing are "awesome"

thank-you!!!!

Going on one year with my morimoto mini H1 projectors and love them more and more every time I drive at nighttime.

Now that im used to the awesome light they put out, when I go back and drive friends' trucks' that have plug-and-play HID kits stuffed into stock housings, I realize how pathetic the light output is (of HID's in stock housings).

Good luck, it was "intresting" getting FX-R into my NBS

I have a 2013 Sierra 2500. That would be great to know if the fx-r's would fit or not. Anyone tried this yet on an LML? They look to be a phenomenal projector, no offense to the morimoto minis as they look great too. I thought I saw a tutorial with the fx-r's but maybe it was in an LMM can't remember right now.

That tutorial for the LMM sierra you saw was from me, its in my build thread. Yes they will fit a LML. The minis are great but fx-r's are the better projector.
