When I installed the '03-'07 full center console in my '01, I couldn't use the rear audio/HVAC controls that came with it. I've been trying to find a way to eliminate them so they are not just there.
What I've found is some of the Silverado's and Avalanches didn't come with rear audio controls. Instead, they came with a rear cubby.
If you are like me and installed a full console in a truck that didn't come with one, or you have upgraded your factory head unit, this is a good way to eliminate the rear audio controls (since they are useless now anyway).
The only part you need to find or buy from GM is the rear cubby. The part number for it is 15189381. I got mine from the local GM dealer for $28 out the door (tax included). When these are installed new, they have a rubber mat in them. GM has discontinued the mat so it is impossible to find.
To replace the audio controls, you need a small flat screw driver. Start by prying out on the top of the audio controls. Once you have it started, grab the buttons and finish pulling it out. Be careful not to damage the console. The audio controls are not held it all that tight.
Once they are out, there is a single plug on the back. Unplug this plug and set the audio controls out of the way. What you are left with is a big hole.
Now just unbox your new cubby hole and install it. Just stick it in the hole and give it a good push to seat it in the console. I installed mine so the mat hold holes was on the top and out of the way.

I've got a USB plug ordered to install inside my rear cubby for anyone in the back needing to plug in a USB cable to charge or play through the radio.
