12/28/17 EDIT - Updated pics. Stupid Photobucket messed up so many good threads across the net by changing their hosting policy.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Though this is a GM recall and for most will be quite easy I took some pics the other day when I did mine.

Symptoms are a noise at highway speeds near the a-pillar(s). This noise is exasperated by a front bug shield.

The fix is to remove the two window trim pieces and add some 3M double sided tape. My noise is gone after the fix and I've got the bug shield.

Start by pulling off the rubber trim. Mine was on there pretty good considering all the dirt and grime 180k brings. At first I thought it might have some glue but it doesn't.

Next remove the 5 Torx screws holding the trim in place. *Note this pic was taken upon re-install when everything was cleaned up.

The trim is held on by the 5 Torx screws AND a small piece of double sided tape. I just pulled it off and didn't bother placing any tape back in that spot.

Image

Grab some detergent and a scrub brush and clean the trim pieces up. You can see here where the double sided tape is located from the factory.

Image

I then cleaned where the trim was removed as well, quite dirty under there.

Image

Brake Clean both the trim pieces where the tape goes and also the windshield and apply the double sided tape. I then re-installed the trim piece with all Torx screws. Next grab the double sided tape covering with some needle nose pliers and pull it out.

Pull out the tape covering and press the trim into place.

No more noises at highway speed!

Thanks to all for the props, it wasn't hard but sometimes its nice to see some pics before heading in.

Honestly I'm not sure, I only remember reading that GM fixed them exactly this way. It might not have even been a "recall" maybe just a bulletin to fix if customers complained. Call your dealer!

I gotta do this, that sound drives me crazy

Great write-up. Thanks!

does anyone know what year(s) the recall was on?

Yep, my 2011 just started doing it on the passenger side. It's almost like a popping noise or like the antenna is loose and bouncing around on the threads. It's driving me crazy! My truck only has 5,300 miles on it. If I take it to the dealer, will they know how to fix the problem or should I not waste my time?..

Hell yea, thanks for the write up!! this is on the short list of shit to get done yesterday.

@Grey Stray, under normal circumstances this would be covered by the Bumper to Bumper warranty, as you more than likely know already. I can understand where you’re coming from so if you would like to save some time and gas money, give the dealership a call and ask them if they know anything about this.

That's great advice, Michelle. I have noticed some dealerships (service departments) are more up to speed than others.

Just want to verify that you removed the tape covering after you installed the trim piece.

Is there enough room to remove the tape cover with the trim piece on?

sub'd for a near future project. This noise has been driving me nuts ever since I bought the truck and couldn't figure out the cause. So glad that nickdiesel found this thread for me! Thanks for the write up, CancerJCC!

Yes an excellent write-up. I couldn't figure out what the noise was until I saw this thread. to me it sounded like swarms of mosquitos hitting the windshield, which made me happy, but then there wouldn't be any mosquito juice on the windshield, which made me sad and confused lol.
Then I saw this thread and realized it started after I installed a bug shield. So this was the easiest fix ever.
Glad I could be a help guys! Gotta love the internet and forums, without them we would all just be stuck with our crazy highway noises!
