Eventually than filter will get oil soaked & start dripping oil. I don't like dripping oil in my garage. Instead of venting it to a simple filter, I suggest mounting an Oil Breather Catch Can to the Frame. Then just chk/drain the catch can at the oil change.

I just installed the resonater plug on my LBZ. My question is this: The only plug I could find was made of red plastic from Lowes. I thought I read somewhere that it could "breakdown" and F*up my turbo. Is there any truth to this. Should I be worried and try to find the metal plug?

I dont know if this applies to turbo diesel vehicles but on gassers that are turbo's. If you bypass the pcv system without positive vaccuum on it you can blow cam seals and other seals that it the pcv system utilizes.

example: most engines are using the valve covers for crank case ventilation and the usually pull vacuum pre turbo for positive venting...isnt that what our engines do...pull pre turbo? that why we get oil in the turbo and intercooler pipes.

One note on doing this re-route of the PCV, make sure you put large enough heater hose or you will have problems with blow-by or oil overflow out your dip stick because of over pressurizing your crank case.

I would use 3/4" or 1" hose and T-Fitting as a minimum and if you leave in very cold areas watch for condensation freezing up the line, thats why oversizing the line is also a good idea.

Is this procedure ill advised if you live in a climate with extreme cold? I live in Canada where it can get -60 degrees celsius. I have limited diesel knowledge and this is my first diesel truck.

Any help is appreciated.

thanks

No! You should be just fine. Make sure you use 3/4 - 1" Heater Hose and T-Fitting this should allow for condensation build up without freezing and blocking the line.

Just make sure you have no low spots on the hose running down under the truck, those would allow pooling and then freezing in extreme cold.

Can anyone shed some light on this statement? People on this board has a vast amount of knowledge and many have this mod, but I was wondering if there is any truth to this?

thanks

that doesnt make any sense, why would it blow seals if theres no pressure
and who has had the seals blow on them? no one unless it gets plugged

No truth in that at all for the Diesel's. I talked to several Diesel Tech's via Email and Phone about this and all said the same thing. Bull @#$*....!

I guess I may have said that wrong...what will blow the seals is plugging the pcv system. Sorry nealsonfire....if the hose plugs due to frozen condensation then the seals could blow since it cant vent.

I put some more thought to it after the fact and the guys posting earlier are stating that but not really explaining why in depth.

So that being said....if its plugged, the seals will blow...thats why theyre recommending the larger hose to prevent that. My bad.

I bought the 2" Test plug at a Napa autoparts store today. They called it a fridge plug. But it won't fit in the resonator hole. Just barely too big. I may have to run up to Home Depot and get one of those Jim Caps. Anybody else have this problem?

Get it from a plumbing shop or plumbing section at Home Depot. They are made to fit into ABS or PCV pipe as a temporary plug for pressure testing. Usually just called a test plug, also made in Yellow PVC. We sell them where I work. (Plumbing Wholesale)
