I keep getting PM's on how to do the PVC REROUTE so here it goes.
PARTS NEEDED
1/2 to 3/4 copper elbow
1" Barstool Cap
5/8 Heater hose
2 hose clamps
Optional 2 inch test plug

Go to Home Depo or a place like that. Go to the plumbing section and get a 1/2 to 3/8 copper 90 degree elbow, and if you want to block your resonator box at the same time get a 2 inch test plug. Then find a bar stool cap in the store.

Then go to your local parts store and get some 5/8 heater hose and 2 hose clamps. Length of hose will depend on where you want the hose to end. I used around 9feet.

Then pop the hood on your truck remove the resonator box

Then take the PVC hose going into the intake off.
Put the Barstool cap on the intake side.

Then take the 1/2 to 3/8 copper elbow and put the 1/2 side into the stock PVC hose. Then take the 5/8 hose and run it down the frame.

I ran mine back to the fuel cooler and put a filter on the end of it. The filter is not needed. Only pressure comes out of the PVC it does not suck so nothing will go into the engine if you do not run filter.

Since you are here if you want you can cap the Resonator if you want. It made my turbo louder.

This is a 2 inch test plug

Test plug in the hole I put a lock nut on for safe keeping

Yep that's what I do. No problems so far. Haven't blocked the EGR yet just the PCV reroute.

I'll be doing mine this weekend! Thanks for saving me some $$$$$

Can someone please tell me the exact elbow needed to do this on the LLY? I found a link at one point but I went back to look at it and it was broken. I have tried about 4 different elbows, none have worked yet. Thanks

Did you read the 1st post of this thread?

Parts list shows 1/2 x 3/4, further down though, it's listed as 1/2 x 3/8.

You don't even need an elbow, all you have to do is rotate the factory t fitting up and put your hose in and your done.

I just purchased my 04 and the first thing I did was hit the duramax forum to see what was being done to delete these retarded emmisons. It didnt take me long to see what a mess the blow-by and egr systems were doing to my motor!!!! I cant believe they would allow oil to pass through the turbo and the air to air....and then, soot from the egr mixing with the oil going directly into the intake!!!! Great write up dude!!!

Still An Active Topic

Just read all 23 pages this morning. An informative read!

Thanks to all through the years for your additions and updating comments.

Seen this thread yesterday, seeing how i had a bi week this weekend i went to lowes and bought the parts today. I didn't read much further into the thread until now, i bought the 5/8 hose and i live in Central New York. Will i be fine or do i have to go by a 1in one

great write up--thanks! I notice you're in CA...do you reverse this when its time to smog the truck?

update. 1 year after doing this mod, I am doing head gaskets now and I notice that my PCV cap (the bar stool leg cap) is really cracked and dry. anyone else experience this? I have more bar stool leg caps, but I would like a more lasting solution...

In the middle of doing head gaskets right now. so what my :cookoo[1]: brain was trying to say is that because I am doing the work myself, I am saving money on labor, now I can pay the $25 bucks to get a strong billet pcv cap!!! :neener

not too much sleep lately... every time I close my eyes I can see all my truck parts. little stressed, never ever done anything this major.

all the junk in the intake manifold and the y-bridge has been removed. it built up over several years. glad to have the egr and pcv issues done. now with ARP studs I will be invincible! :superman

typo

i was thinking the same thing Tater

Just did my PCV reroute this weekend and took plenty of pics to put up.

Took off the resonator box off,

Then it took alot of effort to pull it off

And plugged it up with the barstool cap

Image

Then hooked up the copper elbow and ran the hose around the brake fluid reservoir and down beside the wheel well

Then ran it down the frame and it dumps right where the driver door ends!

Am I understanding this correctly are you guys removing the vacuum source from the PCV system? Looks like that T fitting your pulling off the intake tube and capping with a barstool cap is the PCV systems vacuum source am I wrong on this?

#235 ·
No, there is no vaccum source. All you are doing is re-routing the crankcase vent into the atmosphere rather than routing hot oily air into your air intake.

#236 ·
So that small tube that gets the barstool cap is not on the intake tube feeding the compressor housing?

#237 ·
No, it is. Intake draw there pulls any crankcase vented gases thru (if you want to call that a vacuum) to burn off. Hacking it up just let's it vent to the atmosphere instead, which then condenses to the pavement, and runs off at the 1st rain, polluting your water supply.

Nice mod, eh? nono

LOL I'm wondering how the PCV system will function with no draw on it. There are benefits to having a vacuum source in the crankcase. I come from the LS world and a catch can was a good option as it still allowed the crankcase gasses to be removed. It also has positive effects on ring sealing and power output. With the amount of contaminants introducd into the oil via the EGR and now the added fuel in the regen cycles of the newer motors i'd think a constant flow of fresh air exchanged thru the crankcase would be a good idea. Where is the PCV valve on these trucks?

Different than a Gasser....Technically, I think it's really a CCV.

I have no probs with it as long as you fashion/incorporate a catch can. It doesn't hurt anything leaving it as is and provides no gains, IMO, to hack it up. It's the mixing in of the EGR that makes a mess downstream, not the small amount of oil from venting.

There's nothing stopping anyone from installing a catch can. It wouldn't hurt anything and is required by most racing sanctioning bodies anyway, so if you're building a racer, might as well!
