I used a cone shaped stainless steel wire brush (orange colored) made by Dremel on a Dremel tool. You will not get all the junk brushed out but you will clean all the rust and scale on the fitting and the threads. I washed mine out in varsol (mineral spirits) and blew out real good then I used the dremel tool. The diameter is just right to get the threads and what little you can push it back will allow you to clean the fitting tip.
