Instrument Cluster Problem

On my 2003 GMC Sierra the guages don't always work. It usually occurs at startup and normally only in the morning. The digital display for the DIC works but the analog guages don't move. I thought there might be a TSB on this but can't find it. The problem began at about 40K miles and right before both batteries died. Battery replacement didn't fix the problem. Usually turning the truck off and then starting it again fixes the issue, but not always. Anybody encountered this one?

Yes just recently on my 03. However it has been happening since we started tuning with EFI. Not consistant at all, as it happens every so often. The truck runs fine just can't see WTF is goin on! :help
Gm has had issues with clusters , and there is a TSB out or they were warantying some. www.Specmo.com is GM,s largest repair facility and I know the manager real well. He has said there have been hundreds of them in for repair. Dealer ships usually just replace them.
My 03 silverado just started doing this occasionally.I can kill it out, crank it again and this usually fixes it.Most irritating is not knowing engine temp or fuel left in tank.
The speedo in my 04 out in the garage reads 75 right now. Someone suggested changing the stepper motor. I just don't know how to get in there though.
I just went into the garage and turned the key three times fast almost to the start position. The speedometer reset itself. I don't know if it will last, but it works.
My 03 has had the cluster replaced twice because I keep losing engine hours redings back to zero! Happened 5 times in the last 1,000 miles. Dealer says happening w/many trucks. They put in 2 capacitors & that fix lasted for 1 hour of service. Still a problem for me. Also seems to reduce my battery power too. If I leave radio or door open for 15 min or so the batteries are too low to start truck w/o a jump. Both batteries check out fine by 3 diff. companies. Still no fix!
i also had this problem but i figured out that i programed the truck while i was filling the tank and it threw off my fuel gauge so i took it to the dealership and they recallibrated
GM has faulty stepper motors in their clusters and will only warranty them to 36,000. Look up Speedometer Repair Service on ebay. I pulled mine out and shipped it on a monday and had it back on Saturday. Plus it is a better warranty than chevy (1 year unlimited miles). I haven't had any problems since

speedo

Glad to help. It is, Speedometer Repair Service. 1-860-583-0629 and his name is Carl. You have to just buy his service off of ebay then ship it to him.
Thanks GoldDigger. I'll call. How hard was it to get out?
You just pop off the dash, carefully so you don't crack it. Use a flat srew driver where the tabs are if you need to. Then you remove the 4 srews from around the instrument cluster and unplug it and you're done. It can be driven without it, if you need to, you just won't know anything that is going on with your engine. I drove mine, but it was only 3 miles one way to work. Just an fyi, your engine light will come on once you reinstall it because it is just going through checks. I drove it once it was back together, then unplugged the batteries and it reset. It was worth getting fixed when an officer let me go after stopping me for doing 92 in a 70, cause my speedo was pointing straight down.
I ended up buying 3 stepper motors from ebay. $30 includes shipping. It was a little tricky soldering the motor in and recalibrating the needles, but its fixed.
I was installing a boost gauge in my 06 and now all my warning lights a super dim if they work at all and my tack jumps around if I don't buckle the seat belt or put in tow haul. And I only probed to find the fuse that I wanted to tie into and all fuses are good. Any ideas or would I just have crappy luck and the dash went out at the same time?
