Hey everyone,

Here is the build thread for my mini bike that I'm starting to piece together. It will be powered by a 16hp 420cc Duromax engine that I impulse bought because of a 20% coupon that expires tomorrow (Thanks to Redbeard's Garage!)!! Now I just need to decide if I want knobby tires or more of a street tread!?!?

How much % of the decision had to do with the engine name?

I’m excited!

I WAS going to try the two stroke engine but will save that for something else, and going with a ready to run engine it will keep the guess work down since I already know what to do.

I have two 8” steelies on order and I really can’t make my mind up on tires!

Maybe the knobs to keep it aggressive, because I believe if I stick with a 60t sprocket our back that should give me plenty low end and pretty decent top end (it’s still a non street legal mini bike)

Actually the story behind that is:

Greg aka Redbeards Garage is/was pushing the Duromax engines as a competitor in the small engine game and since I already have a Predator 670cc in the golf cart I wanted to try something different. 🤷🏼‍♂️

It was definitely impulse but when I crunched the numbers I jumped at the opportunity to use a 20% off coupon. Another deciding factor was the electric start option. In the Predator world the 212cc and 301cc are all pull start only, and the 420cc and 670cc are both pull and key ignition. I think the lowest I saw this 420 Duro was Lowe’s for $299, which after tax it’ll jump some, the site and him have a partnership but the engine was $349 with free shipping and with the 20% coupon it was $279, shipped, tax included.... so I jumped on it!

I know there are built 212s out there that can outperform at a cost, I just want to fill the frame up!!

It is funny though that it’s a Duromax engine on a Duramax forum 😂😂😂

Talked to my cousin yesterday about getting him to extend the frame a little. It’s 7/8” tubing and if I can cut it and make a 8” gap or so he can bend in the graphing pieces.

The wheels and motor showed up on Friday and the tires are on order.

I need to get the exhaust, intake, and tank off the top to fit the motor and see what needs to be done..

Tires are in, probably get them mounted up on Monday after the dentist visit!

I’ll swing by the metal place and grab a five foot section of 7/8” tubing if they have any.

So I spent a little time cutting off old brackets and slicing the frame in two spots to basically stretch it 9”.

The fender brackets out back had to go and I used some 12” pieces of .75” to get it squared back up again. Those are temporary until I can get some 7/8” by .75” ID tubing on order to splice it back together. Luckily I have some solid .75” round bar (maybe 6’ worth) I can use as inserts and plug weld when it’s time.

The reason I stretched it was for a few reasons:

1. For better stability

2. To run a jackshaft on the frame because I’m positive with how the motor is positioned it’s going to need it

3. To challenge myself

That motor plate is thin and will not be used, when I can get the skeleton situated I can plate it with something thicker.

Ordered some parts this morning

  • 60t sprocket
  • handlebar risers
  • drum brake
  • handlebar kit (kill switch, brake lever and cable, throttle twist and cable)
I also ordered some internal spring style suspension tubes, so now I just need to make some fork plates. Unsure if I want to keep the rear the same rigid style that it is or add some springs. I have a seat style in mind but I will cross that bridge later, because it and a fuel tank will need to work together..

Well today I received my pieces of 7/8 DOM and figured a parts picture would be OK 🤷🏼‍♂️

I did start on the frame on one side but I’ll post those later when I can get more pictures and have it finished.

I also received my OEM Mega Moto seat, which I like especially since it’s for THIS frame!

Got the hard part on the frame done today

You can see how I would install the solid stock and with the help of a slit I could engage them into both tubes with a flathead screwdriver and hammer. Next up is an engine mount and fork plates!

So I ordered one of those $45 2.4 gallon tanks off eBay with the intent of sectioning it to fit better but idk... seems like stretching the back end and making for a longer wheelbase would be best 🤔

Was thinking maybe to keep it rigid I would just weld in support bars then cut the entire rear section out and raise it up to decrease ground clearance out back

My mind starts wandering when I’m waiting on parts 🤦‍♂️😂🤷🏼‍♂️

Got the wheels coated and had the tires mounted 😎

I even installed a set of bolt on valve stems in the parking lot of Oreilys before getting the tires mounted

I like this style because it has a nice size washer that hides any marks from how they hang the wheels.

Now I can wrap the crap out of the with saran wrap after installing the bearings and get back to mocking up stuff and cutting fork material out!

Haha sort of

we don’t have kids and we’re both close to our mid thirties so times up in that department (honestly think something is off with her or my swimmers can’t swim) 🤷🏼‍♂️

I’m building this one because I bought one of those tan and camo Coleman’s you see parked out in front of Tractor Supply from a friend and then ended up selling it back. So ever since then I’ve been hearing “idk why you sold it I didn’t even get to ride it” from the wifey sooooo I’m building this one in secret 🤫

It’s funny because the day before yesterday she didn’t have any fingernail polish remover so she used some acetone in the garage and right there on the bench were the wheels after going green 😳

I guess she’s blind 😂😂😂

In reality she doesn’t care as long as the numbers look good
