LBZ Turbo Removal

I've read so many threads on removing the turbo, now I see and understand why some people pull the tranny or lift the cab. I just finished fixing my t-case and then found how difficult it was to pull the intercooler. Now I almost have the turbo out, only the hard parts left.

I understand I have wrist problems, but what the hell is with removing the heat shields. The instructions, and forum threads, both just said remove the shields like it was no big deal. But I spent almost as much time removing the three shields as I did pulling the intercooler. Even after I got the bolts out they wouldn't come out of the truck. I also read how people just bend the turbo shield to get it out, and I can't help but think how weak I've become or that mine is just extra thick. I couldn't cut it with the tin snips, not even a dent. Seems like some people have no problem, and other just have nothing but problems.

I only tried for a second to loosen the up pipe bolts, and promptly broke my only 12pt 12mm socket.

Has anyone that has done multiple lbz turbos found that some have enough room, and others don't?

The up pipe bolts weren't all that hard. Three broke off in the manifolds, without even putting much pressure on them. Pipes came out fairly easily. Heat shields were still the hardest part. I can't see how raising the cab or removing the tranny would save any time on the up pipes, but could see it almost being worth the time if you are talking about doing it to remove the heat shields.

I already replaced the turbo bearings and all the seals for the VGT actuator. Easy enough, but spent 15 minutes cleaning up the surface the VGT adjustment ring rides on and it still won't turn, still is more of a press fit to get it on. The vanes moved freely, but the ring was fully stuck on the housing side.

Saving the rest of the intake clean up, and vane ring for another day. Then back together. Can't wait to put those shields back in.

Sorry to hear you are experiencing the same frustration that I had. I left the down-pipe shield on but the Turbo Heat Shield..... That SOB..... I worked on it for about an hour and then I couldn't take it any more.

What worked for me was to take a pair of vise grips and a good deal of anger. pulled the thing right out. Needless to say, it did not go back in the truck...

Good Luck!
