LLY Burning Oil

I bought an 05 lly a year ago with 80,000 miles on it. I put an lbz mouthpiece, a cold air intake, and a 5" mbrp exhaust with straight pipe on it. It is stock other than that. At about 88,000 miles, i noticed it was burning oil because i could smell it. I checked my oil levels, and turns out it was actually burning oil (didn't even touch the dipstick). I changed the oil immediately, and 2000 miles later it had burn a quart of oil. It smokes at idle pretty much all the time, and you can definitely smell it in the fumes. Any ideas as to what the problem might be?

Has to be something because I am on extended oil changes...up to 20,000 kms and have never added a drop...Hope you find out whats causing that

Oil consumption is normal in a diesel........

Most duramaxs burn about 2 quarts during an normal oil change interval.........

The smell might be an injector issue, check you balance rates...................

I wouldn't say easy fix. Turbo will have to be removed, disassembled etc.

Don't get to worried about it until you know it's the turbo. I'd suggest pulling your exhaust apart at the downpipe and check for a thick oily residue in the pipe.

Is it burning the same amount consistently now? You definitely have something going on if it's hazing at idle, and you can smell it.

i think i saw a link to a youtube video that you put on duramaxdiesels.com. Did that end up being valve seals, or was that turbo seals? How much did it cost to fix it if you don't mind me asking?

Reroute your PCV, clean the boost tubes really well and then run it hard for a week. After that open it back up and check your boost tubes for oil residue. Leaks on the exhaust side are harder to see but typically the oil will be found in your up pipes and downpipe as well. It's a bit of a pain to check those so just be sure not to break one of the up pipe bolts or the turbo has to come off to drill them out.
