I just talked to my GM buddy and he said he does not see a bulletin for bad head gaskets. Once you get the bulletin get the DOC ID # it is typically 7-8 characters printed on the top of every page of the bulletin. They might have a number but it does not look like they are being truthful.

Early 2011-12's had a TIB for head bolt problems, I wonder if this is what they are using?

working on getting the "bulletin".... they will be starting tear down hopefully tomorrow am. said they have to order the gaskets after the heads are off to confirm which ones are needed? I believe I've heard that before.

damn man. I've been dealing with mine since mid October or so. They started tear down late yesterday afternoon. all parts are ordered, except gaskets, as they need to get the heads off. fingers crossed I get her back next weekend

I got mine back at noon today and they came with a new procedure that it should have a inch or so on the passenger side of tank mine got two new head gaskets new head bolts etc.. Have a bad filling it ain't fixed they told me to drive it and if the light came back on to bring it back if it does I'm going to request a buy back I don't want a 56000 dollar truck that's in the shop for a month at a time I'll keep you posted on how mines doing

that doesn't sound to comforting. Hope its all good for you! i'll be doing the same thing if mine is not right after the fix. whats the new procedure with the tank?

To overfill coolant so that the passenger side of the tank has a inch or so of coolant and they took the cap off and rev engine to like 2500 rpm 3 times to work air out of system and they drove a total of 100 miles and the driver side should be just below min line on tank to allow for expansion but the reason I don't thank mine is fixed is I drove 70 miles today and the level didn't rise with the engine warm it stayed where it was when I picked it up I don't thank gm even know what's wrong and there guessing the mechanic said he thought the bolts did not fill tight when they took mine apart. I have to make trip this weekend and I'm taking my truck I'll see what it does and post any new news I have

gotcha. I know it takes a while for the second thermostat to open up. maybe yours didn't get hot enough on the drive... any who, good luck and let us know how it goes

Any updates? I have noticed the exact same symptoms you had see my post

From your sig im assuming you are all stock? I had the low coolant light come on the dic, checked the coolant level and both sides of the tank were same level (at seam). When engine is cool the upper rad hose is easily squeezed. When i remove tank cap, i can hear bubbling and the level in the engine side will rise an inch. Also saw the black flakes in the throat below the cap.

Did you notice and coolant coming out of the passenger side of the tank through the relief? How did they diagnose head gasket failure and was it one side or both?

CTduramaxed.... i've got bad head gaskets. dealer put in dye, pressure tested it and pulled glow plugs. first issue was found on cylinder #3. after that, they stopped and have went forward with pulling the cab and ordering parts. I went by the dealer and checked everything out after it was all torn down. the black/grey flakes in the coolant were a part of the gasket, could scrap it off the gasket with my finger nail. GM Tech support noted some bad gaskets from the manufacturer, where granulations got in-between the layers of the gaskets when they were made, causing bad gaskets. not sure if that is 100% the issue, but I hope so. Dealer is also sending the heads to a shop tomorrow to have the decks checked. Hopefully she's good to go after the fix. good luck to you as well.

When was your truck manufactured?

#71 ·
dMax_Affair don't know when it was manufactured and all the paperwork is in it at the dealer. Why? trying to gauge when the issues took place?

CTduramaxed I haven't yet, but I'm trying to get a copy of it. mine is stock, but if your tuned i think your out of warranty regardless, I would have to say.

No luckily i'm good. My dealer is going to replace the head gaskets under warranty and replace the studs with ARP studs. I was just curious to hear if there was a bulletin out.

Just wondering if CTduramaxed and your trucks were built close together...

^^^ buy parts off VIN from dealer. Also I would not leave the dealer without a copy of the "document" I think they are just pulling something out to make you feel a little better. If they are working off a document they will be able to easily pull it up and it is not a hassle to find it again if they miss placed it.

cab is back mounted to the frame. went by the dealer yesterday and they had it idling. they will be test driving, etc on monday after the new turbo down pipe clamp comes in. fingers crossed its all good. I want to delete and tune this sucker after its running good.

picked it up yesterday, put about 10 miles on it... went to get on the highway and check engine light came on, so back to the dealer I went. light came on due to the EGR cooler throwing a code. Dealer ordered one overnight and installed it today. They are putting a few more miles on it, then pressure testing in am and I will hopefully get it back. Fingers crossed, she's good to go!

could not get a copy of the "issue". I did see a brief correspondence with GM tech asst regarding the issue, but that was it. Bottom line, I just want it fixed and to have no more issue.
