I have a 2017 Duramax about 70% of the time I pull the dipstick the oil is about 2 inches above the full mark. If I leave the dipstick out for a couple minutes then put it back in it reads in the normal range. It does this even if it sets overnight. What would be causing this to happen. It has only been doing this sense the last oil change I use Amsoil signature diesel oil and the Amsoil filter. TIA

Not a problem if you can get a good reading after a couple of minutes! Sometimes the way the tube and dipstick go in smears the oil around. Hey, I have a 2010 Corolla and it's almost impossible to get a valid reading, even after waiting! You'd think after 100 years they would know how to design a dipstick system that works (or maybe it's a lost art?).

Try this: Instead of doing the dipstick the normal way, 1st remove the filler cap where you would pour in new oil, then do the dipstick check and see if any difference.

I agree. After an oil change and fill.

And in level ground. Start to motor. Look for leaks.

Turn it all off.

Unscrew the cap again

Pull and clean dip stick. Put back in. And pull out and check.

Should be good

If you wait too long oil drains back.

I like a full system when the oil is in place. Not after is all returns.
