So I have a 2006 LBZ and today I heard a sound while turning in a parking lot and have turned the radio down and listened to it. Its coming from the steering wheel area and it sounds (for a lack of a better scenario) like sand is stuck between the steering wheel as you turn it. Or like rubbing something softer like paper or plastic pieces together.

Any ideas? Could it just be dirt/dust in that crevice and it will go away eventually?

You have to remove the intermediate Steering shaft first. Im told the biggest PITS is getting that bearing out after the shaft is off.

Use your seat belt to keep the steering wheel from rotating while it is disconnected or you can damage the Clock spring in the steering wheel.
