P1488 or P24DA

I thought would drop a few lines and help out the next guy. I experienced the P1488 code and began my journey into proper auto ownership.

Please take a look at tech bulletins PIP57484 which was early in the diagnosis process. Then it appears bulletins 21-NA-095 dated June of 2021 then again in January of 2023. There appears to be evolution of the repair process. Initially calling for a new clamp possibly sensor, then Tiger Patch (muffler/tailpipe quick patch) and finally a graphite seal that is mentioned in the last bulletin.

Upon my initial inspection of my clamp, it was positioned at an odd angle. Thinking the odd angle might not allow for a good seal I removed the clamp and added foil tape (what I had on me) and tightened back up. This fix only last about 1k. I currently have my truck at dealer awaiting code review for another issue so I asked dealer if they could take a look. I will update what they say and hopefully have a permanent fix. For the record I asked if the sensor or the clamp would be covered by the warranty and was told the sensor would not be covered, clamp would. I'm not splitting hairs with dealer just yet. I want to hear them out after they run diagnostics.

If I wasn't chasing another code unrelated to the P1488 that is fuel related (connector or injector) I would be ordering the inexpensive clamp and graphite seal and fix myself.

6 year 100k mile emissions warranty would seem to cover a sensor used in the emissions system to me. Seems odd to hear otherwise.
It can depend on what state, and what sensor, but emissions warranty isn't the same miles/time as the duramax powertrain warranty.
Some emissions items are covered by powertrain and emissions.
Emissions warranty miles and time can vary.

Ok so 8 years 80,000 miles. He's still well under that.
If it’s a NOX sensor, it says it’s covered under 5 year, 100,000 mile diesel powertrain warranty (page #5):

Is this for Canada? I believe US is 6/100 for Dmax. Did you get all of this info from the Diesel Supplement?
Back from the dead, shop took a week to run diagnostics, order parts and installed on second week. I wasn't able to speak with service writer about repair as they were off. But tech notes the following: "Codes 0300, P0204 and P01488 found terminal fretting on #4 injector. Performed flow chart for P01488 found faulty particular matter sensor" Further he noted, " Replace particulate. OLH for particular matter sensor, #4 injector and injector sensor."

I figured they would try the clamp fix and graphite seal fix first before throwing the sensor part at it. I looked at the clamp and my "homemade tape job" and both were untouched. I was unaware they are able to test the sensor as the tech bulletins available were not mentioning this. Prior to throwing the second 1488 code, I had reset the 1488 code before was able to get about 1k out of it so I'm holding my breathe. If the fix holds good on them!

0204, I assume the terminal fretting could indeed be caused by a bad connector or an injector. Either way I'm glad they replaced both. I understand the 6.6 Duramax had issues with connectors so I'm wondering if we are seeing the same?

Thank guys for looking out for warranty coverage. All parts and labor covered under warranty. I too thought the sensor should be covered under emissions...

Going forward I will update thread if 1488 comes back. Onward and upward!

You can get if from the warranty booklet, not the diesel supplement.

If you don't have it, it can be downloaded from GM's website.

From above link for 2021 chev from the US gm website:

Welp, 100 plus or minus miles back from dealership, P1488 is back with a new kicker, P2C7A. This time around when I returned to dealership I printed and included the service bulletins I mentioned in my initial post. I received a call back and they allowed that it was the "clamp" and they are attempting to order clamp however the clamp was on "national backorder". I asked if it would be possible to order seal 86806078 AND clamp 86799823 together and they verbally agreed. I further asked if the technician actually completed a smoke test to obtain where the leak was, and he said they had. I'm going to try to find the parts in stock and get the dealer to order. I will update as we get this stuff sorted out. On a side note. I wonder if the clamp could be cut down and rewelded. A straight cut across the clamp. The cut made with a cutoff wheel removing 1/8 or 1/4 of inch. Then reweld cleaning up the weld to flush in the inside of the clamp. I always felt the clamp might be a little large and compressing the connection sufficiently upon tightening might minimize the leak to not throw code. Just throwing out the idea. I suppose if my truck wasn't under warranty this might be something I would try. Crazy to think this clamp can cause all this havoc.

Back from dealer 2.0. This time around they replaced the clamp and gasket. I'm a few hundred miles into it and so far, so good. Part numbers (86799823) clamp, (86806078) seal. Parts and labor were covered under warranty, 57k on my truck. It took a little time and prodding to help source the parts, but they were eventually able to locate the parts. This time around they actually performed a "smoke test" and determined the exhaust leak was indeed coming from clamp.
