I have read oodles of threads on replacing this pump, but have found nothing about leaving the reservoir on and replacing just the pump. Any comments on this?

MY comment - get a Delco replacement. Reman or brand new. I replaced mine with a reman from a local parts store because I was in a hurry. I KNEW BETTER! It lasted less than 2 days and locked up and snapped the pulley shaft in a FREAKING parking garage! Ever drive one of these monsters w/o p.s.????

Had the same type problem with a rebuilt hydro boost unit but it actually lasted a little over a year before it started leaking... I KNEW BETTER! The Delco one is now 3-4 years and works great.

My rebuilt Delco alternator that I put on ~10 years and ~200,000 miles ago is still going - although I have seen the battery light stay on 30-40 seconds after starting twice now in the past 2 weeks. I'm thinking it's probably time for a new one.... The factory alternator only went about 220k miles.

The reman POS pump cost about ~$125. Brand new Delco cost ~$175 (at another local parts place). I'm sure it would have been even cheaper if I had the time to order it from Rockauto... actually I just looked it up.... $143 BRAND NEW.

I just wish I knew if I really need a new pump. Replaced steering gear due to seal leak 6 mo ago. I don't remember that the steering was stiff with a couple of easing surges when going into and through a curve, prior to changing the gear, very hard to accurately explain this symptom. I thought to flush the system only to discover the fluid was already clear as new no doubt due to the gear change. This old man is so tired of shade tree mechanic-ing but living on SS doesn't leave much choice.
