I just picked up a 73K GMC SLT Crew 4WD short LBZ, and will be towing a double tag car hauler to Moab Utah from Atlanta, weighing approximately 14000#'s.
I did this last year with an 01' and got about 9 MPG running 80 or whatever in strong headwinds much of the way. We were loaded heavy. I had installed a Diablosport Predator towing 30hp program, even though it had an aftermarket air intake and exhaust system and could have gone higher, but wanted to realize the best MPG possible.
The new LBZ is completely stock. Limited budget so not going with the on-board changeable programs and gauges.
Is there a better buy than a $279 Diablosport Predator?
Should I buy another Diablosport Predator or stay witht he stock program?
If yes, what program should I install?
i dont think you'll really get that much better mpg with a canned tuner unless you open up that exhaust. i think your best to just save the money for fuel JMO
I ran the diablo on My Lbz for a little over a year and it worked well. I then Got EFI and used the Diablo on a Company truck. On the lowest setting the truck gained almost 2 mpg and runs through the gears smoother. It is an 07 classic crewcab, longbed, 3500 with a utility bed and chocked full of tools. It probably weighs at least 11k by itself. I would install a 4" exhaust to complement it with a muffler they are not bad on the road
Thanks. I've read that the EFI allows you to custom program. I don't want to screw it up, so does it have basic tunes like the Diablosport? I'll go goggleing now....
Shoot yeah!!!!!! When you order EFI they usually throw in two tunes with it. You tell your tuner what you want to do and they will custom tune it for you. If you do not want to pay for the whole set up you can just buy a pre-tuned ECM and a DSP switch. You can run two tunes one for towing and one for running empty. They do not have to be big power tunes and you will be flat impressed with the EFI. I was and still am
You can go with MBRP or Diamond Eye. The MBRP cost a little more but if you do not have much patience they are the one to go with. They fit nice and the hangers are welded on. The Diamond eye is a little cheaper but you have to do a little tweaking here and there to get the fit you want. They are both pretty quiet compared to a Cummins or Powerstroke.Mine will give a little drone at highway speeds but nothing the radio does not drown out pretty easy.
