Questionable Tranny advice??

I was going to have my LLYs Allison Trans fluid, filter, etc changed. I called a Transmission shop. The owner told me he would NOT suggest changing the fluid or the filter. He went on to say that the way transmissions are built anymore, the color of the fluid is more of a tool to determine what may be happening to the transmission. He said as long as you are not having problems, He would NOT change it. He was very emphatic about this. Now, my 05 only has 74K miles on it, but I was just wanting to do some preventative maintenance.

What say you all? I appreciated his advice since it was not in his best interest to turn away a sale, but who knows?????? ----I suppose if I was extremely suspicious I could think he was trying to make me burn my tranny up and hope I would come to him when probelms REALLY started:rolleyes:

George,

I appreciate your input and advice. I looked through the standard maintenance for Chevy, but it did not give clear answers. This is why I called the tranny shop.

I will run it to chevy and have them do it and see if they can't figure out why my truck runs so bad and dies too??? I have asked about this here but come up short as no one seems to know?

Thanks, Grant

74K is too long to go if you're talking about the spin-on filter, I do mine every other oil change (about 6K) and there is always a little dirty film on the magnet. Internal filter can probably go a long time if you change fluid regularly. I tow a lot and I wouldn't go much beyond 75K between fluid changes, even with Transynd.

I appreciate the info. Like I said, when the guy told me to not even worry about it, I was a little perplexed. He gave a pretty thorough explanation, but figured running it by people here may yield more information.

I wanted to do this regardless, but the guy was pretty sincere when he opted against it???

If I were you I would go out and buy some fluid (Dex III) pronto and do a dump/drain/spin-on immediately, then in a few days do another dump and drain.

But thats me.

I do believe the 5 spd Allison you have requires the Dex III, you may have to search whether you can use a Dex VI or not depending on your serial number because Dex VI destroys the seals on certain 5 spd Allisons. Or you could just opt out and get a TES-295 Allison Approved fluid like Transynd or Mobil Delvac.

It won't cost you nearly half of what a dealer or tranny shop will charge you.

The only transmission I never change the fluid on is my Eaton-Fuller 18 speed, which they recommend I never change until overhaul. Makes no sense to me!

He is scared of the Allison, happens all the time. He has never worked on one, just find the local service shop for the local school busses and they will fix you right up.

That was my first thought until he went into great detail about the Allison! He even named his daughter Allison because he worked on so many.....Don't believe he is scared, but...........

I will have it checked out by the local Big Rig place that works on all my father in laws 18wheelers.

Thanks, Grant

You have to change the fluid & filter.
Iv been doing the spin on filter every 15K (part of my scheduled maintenance) & filter/fluid every 50K.
