Race Fuel Valve or Shim Kit

The only thing that you would have to consider a risk with the race valve would be if there was a software glitch or some odd ball instance that your rail pressure would raise to be sky high. With a plug in there instead of a relief valve you could recieve damage to your injection system. Odds of it are slim to none, but that is why PPE recomends the rave valve for off road use only.

The shim kit isn't hard to install, it requires the same amount of busted knuckles and swearing that the race valve will. Plus it's alot cheaper also.

U got that right, Ive done 2 05's and 2 04.5's for some reason the 05's were tighter than heck, the 04's came loose with a wrench. Make sure u use a GOOD 6 point wrench/socket/whatever U dont want to round it off. If u do it will never come out!

Its a tight fit but what worked for me was a small 3/8 impact with a snap-on swivel head 18mm impact socket. Jam it down in there and hit it!

i found tieing a rope to a 18MM open end wrench works the best but the only problem is you need 2 people to do it on to the hold the wrench and the other to pull, you'll knuckels will thank you for doing it that way and by the way i've done 15 of these bad boys and the LLY is the hardest to do IMO bc the way the injection box bracket is mounted..i put the race vavle in my LLY and the shim kit in my LBZ but i put all 3 washers in for the LBZ..

i dont mean to jump off topic but what exactly does this shim kit do? and what are the advantages of it?

thanks, cody

The "fuel pressure relief valve" is a problem with LLY's when running aftermarket tuning. What happens is the spring inside the valve is to weak to hold back spikes in rail pressure. This dumps the rail pressure and sets a low rail pressure code, then engine goes into limp mode.

Shims go under the spring to increase holding pressure. I've run both shimmed and the race valve with same results.

My LBZ has not had the problem to date, and I've not heard of any other LBZ's that needed to be shimmed.

i put the race valve in my LBZ bc i was getting a 0087 code since i did the valve i haven't had any trouble with the 0087 code untill i downloaded the big PPE tune and then i had to do lift pumps, before the big tune i was runnin the 250HP..

i would cut thru the chase and do the race valve right away, thats what we did for our duramax's and so far so good.

I have the PPE shim kit setting at home waiting to be installed. Will you lose any fuel when installing thise or do I not dig that far into the rail??

Just a couple ounces is all. I put a small rag under the rail.

FYI, There will some cranking time when starting for the first time after install.
