So its time I fully matured and grew up.

My part time truck is a 2001 LB7 CCLB Dmax LT with 37s, a 12 inch Full Throttle Suspension lift, Weld Cheyenne Evo wheels, Longhorn Fab traction bars, side dumped straight exhaust and PPEI tuned and a few other mods. Its a long story, which I will gladly relay, but the bottom line is I can't really use it for its intended purpose with a loading height for the tailgate at around 50 inches. The plan is to neuter it and replace the 37s with 35s and the 12 inch lift with a 6 inch lift.

Here it is with the drop hitch for reference, IIRC that is an 18 inch drop hitch...and a picture next to the LML dually for size

So, first for a little background.....

And they don’t break parts….

Adam is that you?

Been a minute.

Stuff trickling in. Seal drivers, red powder, Tesa tape and GM RTV. Will be a lot easier to dispense with a caulk gun.

Haven’t gotten a shipping confirmation of my gasket set so we wait…

Also ordered black, gold, silver and clear powder. So no telling where this will go.

It’s just a lowly worn out old LB7 trying to make 650 but maybe it will look good.

It appears to be me🤷🏻‍♂️🤣

CompD closed its servers few days ago.. had some 20k posts over there.. almost made it 20 years..😥

I used Permatex 81173 black silicone adhesive to glue my engines and anything else back together vs the GM grey stuff

Welcome back from the dark side….

Still a bit of analysis paralysis on who’s parts to use, but I did just get a 30L ultrasonic heated parts cleaner and 5 gallons of evaporust. Hope to get my parts back from the blaster this week and get a few parts powdered this coming weekend. It would be nice to get the bottom all covered up and just have the top side to work on when heads and injectors and such show up.

#221 ·
Well got a shipping update. The gasket set and PPE lower oil pan will be here Thursday. So at a minimum I can get the rear cover on and the lower pan powdered. If my blaster is true to his word then I’ll also be able to get the upper pan on and lower pan on this weekend before taking the youngest back to Texas A&M. Powdering the brackets should keep me busy for a bit while I wait on parts to come in and blast and clean bolts and other stuff.

Aaaaannnd, I just burnt my hand on the Amex card, Here is the final list,

DDP 64mm stage 2
Fleece New casting cupless heads
S&S 65% SAC Injectors
Exergy 10mm pump
DHD Cast iron manifolds and stainless up pipes
Fleece Remote oil feed kit for the turbo
PPE stainless 3 inch downpipe
DHD molded low pressure fuel line kit to replace all low pressure hoses
LDS head stud kit
LDS intake heater delete plug
Dorman Injector line grommets (since I took mine out to powder coat)

Still need GM OEM gaskets, cam and crank sensor, and motor mounts and the coolant return line (mine was bent/collapsed/crushed pretty good so not taking a chance.

Now I can email PPEI and spec out the tunes

Buy once, cry once. I’ll be in the dog house if you need me. Add that to two kids tuition payments and I think we call that negative cash flow for the month…

Thanks Justin. I confirmed with them that since it’s LB7 non emission, they can still do it. That is the whole reason I still have this truck and didnt go buy a new dually…. Wife doesnt understand but she did’t want me to drop 90k either.

And for the older people amongst us who may get rhe reference, my wife astutely referenced Rush (the band) when she said that this truck is my Red Barchetta

My uncle has a country place
That no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm
Before the Motor Law
And on Sundays I elude the eyes
And hop the Turbine Freight
To far outside the Wire
Where my white-haired uncle waits
Jump to the ground
As the Turbo slows to cross the borderline
Run like the wind
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me an old machine
For fifty odd years
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream
I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car
A brilliant red Barchetta
From a better vanished time
I fire up the willing engine
Responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel
I commit my weekly crime
Wind
In my hair
Shifting and drifting
Mechanical music
Adrenaline surge
Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware
Suddenly ahead of me
Across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air car
Shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires
To run the deadly race
Go screaming through the valley
As another joins the chase
Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man
Laughing out loud with fear and hope
I've got a desperate plan
At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded at the riverside
Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle at the fireside

Back to our regularly scheduled programming. Just dropped the crank for my other long term LB7 build off at the crank shop for keying and polishing and checking.

I’d so glad I dropped my parts at a real blaster. He was done in like 2 hours.

Worth every penny of my time.

My PPE pan shoudl be here this week so it looks like I’ll be powder coating this weekend. I have Victory Red powder and I hope my gold silver and black show up before I head up to the ranch. It would be nice to get the rear cover, upper and lower pan on and have the bottom end sealed up while I wait on the heads, injectors, CP3, turbo and other misc stuff.

#231 ·
Thinking gold for the manifolds,t bridge and turbo cover, red for the valve covers and lower pan. And black on the brackets. That still leaves the water crossover and thermostat cover.

PPE pan and Mahle gaskets showed up today. Man that PPE pan is a work of art. I’ll lay my machinists edge on it to check flatness when I get to the ranch but seems well made.

So I pick up the blasted covers Friday and head to the ranch, so rear cover and both oil pans should be on.

Nic also gave me a great piece of advice, when I powder the alternator bracket I need to grind off the powder where it contacts the block and where the alternator joins the bracket. Otherwise no ground path for the alternator.

Looks good charles. Just gotta swap over the sensor from the stock pan.

Not sure any of it matters with all the crap thats on one of these engines. All you’ll see is the IC tubes and a bunch of wires..

But yeah. I have silver, gold, red and black. We’ll see what happens when I start powder coating.

More parts showed up today. Motor mount (yes singular as the other mount was out of stock) , PPE firewall blanket and some nifty Lisle sensor pliers

Made it to the ranch with parts in tow. Picked up blasted parts on the way

Will bake these out at 350 for 3o minutes to draw any oils to the top then wash with degreaser before powder coating.

Put the rear engine cover on and got the upper pan cleaned and had to make some brackets to have it sit on the bottom of the oven. Too big to sit on the racks and it will have to stand on its side and sit on the bottom of the oven. Rest of the parts will fit fine. So while that is drying, I started on the PPE lower pan

Got the front and rear seals in. Didn’t find a gasket for the water block off plate on the rear engine cover….maybe it’s RTV? Gotta look into that.

Also set up my ultrasonic cleaner and it seems to work pretty well. Dumped some random old bolts in and it cleaned them up nicely. 175 degrees and 40 minutes.

Progressing nicely Charles!

Back out in the shop this morning, out gassing, degreasing and powder coating parts.

Got the upper pan done. It was the hardest since it only barely fits in the oven diagonally sitting on the floor of the oven. Had to use the old trash lower pan as a stand and masking, then made a couple of other brackets to keep it off teh floor. Masked the opening with parchment paper when spraying and then into the oven. Turned out really well.

Still cant believe that Mahle gasket set did not include the water block off gasket. Didn’t come with a content list and can’t find one on the web either. Baffling.

OK, menses. The PPE pan came with a gasket. I’m inclined to use RTV instead. Thoughts?

#251 ·
Either will work.
Isn't RTV factory?
If it was a silicone gasket, I'd use it for sure.

I always like to keep some gasket material in stock, so if I'm missing a gasket, I can always make one. I'm not close to a parts store and they nearly always have to order anything needed in. No one stocks anything anymore.
