i just got a 6.2 diesl a few months ago it ran great and then last night i go to start it it ran full bore and wouldnt shut off no matter what i tried. finally got it shut off by running water over it but now i have a bigger problem. the pistons, gaskets, valves everything is screwed up. should i try and rebuild it or swap for a 6.5 or gas?

You ran water OVER it and it shut down? Or do you mean you ran water INTO it, as in putting the hose in the intake? If you ran water into the intake, that will shut it down alright, but you will have major internal damage. Both to your engine and your wallet if you choose to rebuild it. If somehow you just shorted out the electronics and shut it down then your damage from the over-revs could range from nothing to a whole lot more then you want to spend. The valve train usually takes the worst beating in these cases. Pull the covers and see what it looks like. Any damage to the valve train can make an engine sound terrible but is often a relatively easy fix. At worst you would have to pull the heads to see if there is any piston damage. If you decide to swap, swapping same for same is always the easiest and often the cheapest, provided you can find a good 6.2. I strongly suggest you put a set of bearings into any engine you decide to swap in. There won't be an easier time to do it. Did you find the reason for the runaway? If you're not sure and decide to try to restart the engine remove the intake piping and have somebody standing by with a board to put over the intake.

i used the truck for just about everything from hunting, fourwheeling and a daily driver. i didnt run water down the intake just over the engine to keep it cooled off because it blew the gaskets and the radiator hoses. i am not completely sure on the runaway but i think it has something to do with the injection pump. i removed the engine yesterday and am starting to take it apart to find what damage it caused. hopefully not a whole lot. how hard is it to swap a 6.5 into it if the cost of a rebuild is way too high?

From how you say you use the truck, I'd swap a 350 into it in a heartbeat vs another 6.2. Thats just me, but parts for a SBC are dirt cheap, and you can probably find a good running 350 for under $500, and it'll likely feel alot more powerful than your 6.2 does. It will get worse mileage, thats almost a given, but it will save you some bucks up front, and if anything breaks later on, parts are cheap. I've never messed with a 6.2 so I don't know, but I imagine parts are probably a little harder to come by than for a 350.

Pretty much what I was getting at, if you have a daily driver and like the mileage more than power, rebuild. If you tow with it and want a little performance gasser it is. I would put another 6.2 with a turbo or a 6.5 turbo in it if it was me but i like to be a little different and kinda like the sound of the old rattle traps. :rockin

Governor lets it run away.

The swap with a 6.5 shouldnt be too difficult. Look up Heath Diesel he specializes in the 6.5 and has what i believe is the speed record with the 6.5. His engine though is a 6.2 bored out to 6.5 so the sizes of the engines should be similar.

i have owned several 6.2s over the years, kinda have a soft spot for em too. i hear you can get military crate motors pretty cheap. what kind of shape is the truck in? must be pretty good if you are considering a motor swap. 12 valve would be kinda cool too. saw a motor mount kit for them in diesel power

the truck is in almost perfect condition. no dents dings scratches or anything in it. i would like to put a 12 valve in it but finding out for a reasonable price is the thing. ill probably swap it for a turobed 6.5. does anyone near grand junction colorado have a 6.5 with the turbo they would consier selling?

problem with the 6.5 swap is you have to find a 92-93 with a manual injection pump unless you plan on changing pumps. does a 6.2 pump work on a 6.5? probably should but i don't know. i swapped a good 6.2 into a 93 with a bad 6.5 but never the other way around. good luck keep us informed and post some pics when you are done.:drink
