Speed Limiter

Hi everyone,

I was just curious for those of you with the 3.0 duramax if your truck came with a speed limiter or not?
I thought all GM’s since the late 90s came with the standard 98mph limiter, and from what I have seen on YouTube seems like depending what size you have for tires people get 98 to 105mph.

It appears my truck doesn’t have a limiter or I have yet to find it. Is my truck a 1 off?

There will be some limiter, there has to be. The question is - what is it set to. Usually it's going to be within range of the speed rating of the tires that it came from the factory with.
That’s interesting.
I thought they were all set to 98mph

I still believe mine must be set incredibly high.
I don’t know if I want to see where it is. Just nice to be able to exceed 98mph.

Two of my buddies have GMs and both hit 98 and stop. But they are gas trucks. One’s a 6.0 vortec other is a 5.3

Speed ratings are higher on tires now. Partly due to the higher speed limits in some states and Partly because tire technology is getting better. If you like to go fast, make sure the tires you replace them with have the same speed rating. Most tire shops won't install lower speed rated tires on performance cars. It makes buying tires for my Corvettes expensive and limits my choices even though it never goes that fast. But because it can, they won't install tires not rated for the equivalent of the old Z rating listed on the door post sticker. I'm surprised truck door stickers don't have a speed rating. The goodyears that came on my 2020 6.2 1500 have a high speed rating. Faster than I would ever go in the truck as I don't drive it anywhere that could be done with reasonable safety. If I'm going to pay to drive on a track it's going to be with one of my Vettes.

Thank you for that information! That’s very interesting and makes total sense.

These trucks can certainly go very, very quick. But like you said if I’m going to pay to go on a track it’ll be with something other than a pickup lol

I was just surprised mine didn’t have the signature 98mph limiter and when I YouTube’d it I saw other similar year trucks stopping at 98 or so.

The speed limiter only kicks in after a set amount of time has passed while you are at/above the limiter.
Say you are passing a convoy or in a situation where you are have to be at/above the 98mph, truck will let you accelerate past it until the clock runs out and only then it cuts off the fuel.
I’m not sure what the time limit is but I believe it is built in.
