Tried it again and started right up. its done it bout 5 differ times since ive bought it in june. Should i be replacing my starter so i dont wreck my flywheel? anybody else have this problem?

You have a common problem with the LLY and others in that time period. I have read everything I can find and there is a ton of information on the Diesel Place forum. So far I have not been able to find out what the root problem is or what is a sure fix. Check out this posting on this forum http://www.duramaxforum.com/forum/01-04-5-lb7-duramax-powertrain/66018-occasional-starter-grind.html

Then this link on Diesel Place Has anyone solved the grinding starter problem? - Diesel Place : Chevrolet and GMC Diesel Truck Forums

This is only two of many postings of many about this problem.

You may need a full pot of coffee and good luck finding a solution to your problem. I would be interested in a solid solution as my LLY has done it in the past. Now I may be in trouble as my LLY may read this and start acting up next time I start it.

Mine does the exact same thing. Had a new starter installed and it still does it. Not too often but it's sounds terrible. I had my trans built so I got the flywheel inspected at the same time. The flywheel was perfect. I just gave up on it and delt with it

Denso starter better?

My 2005 starter is grinding occasionally too. Wonder about bringing it to my starter alternator shop in town for a rebuild or getting a new Denso starter. The Denso seems to be better than the big box rebuild. How about getting one from the Chevrolet dealer? Any successful recommendations?

If you do a search on this problem and read all of the posts you will most likely come to the same conclusion I have. A new starter and it does not matter where or who it comes from will probably not correct the problem.

i never had this problem with my stock starter but about 6 months after i replaced with an advanced auto lifetime warranty starter, it started doing it, but it only seemed like it would do it after it sat for a little while

My occasional grind has turned into a non stop grind, truck is dead on the jobsite. Was going to have it rebuilt, but ordered a Bosch reman. Can't waste a day having it rebuilt, I'm hoping it will fix the problem but after alot of searching, it's not likely.
Any new info?

Just so yall will know, I put the isuzu starter it mine and it still does it. Its only about three times a month but i really wish someone knew what caused it

My dad's dmax starter started grinding a couple years ago. Sometimes it wouldn't do it...and sometimes it would. Pry would grind 25% of the time. But when it would, sometimes he would have to try it 3..4..5 times before it would crank instead of grind. He finally got it checked out here about a month ago. Turned out there was teeth completely broken off the flywheel (not sure how many). So for him it was a new flywheel and good to go.

How much was the new flywheel? Mine does it about like your dads was doing, probably 25% of the time and having to try it several times before it starts. It's gets on my nerves and it's embarassing!

Mine still does it occasionally. Hasn't done it in a month or so but is liable to do it again today. I also replaced the starter and inspected the flywheel, can't figure this one out

New starter will not be in till thurs. I'm going to have them inspect the flex plate to see if any teeth are missing, this could end up being quite $$$.

Yes, this is such a stupid embarrassing problem it drives me nuts. I've been dealing with this as well since I bought mine in April 2011. That Diesel Place thread linked in the first page has the most info on it and the thread I'm most active on.

Over there a member is testing the latest possible fix installing a new flywheel and a mean green starter. These are the prices and parts I have researched so far.

flywheel (part #97378429) $230
flywheel bolts (part #97226126) $2.50 each X 8 = $20
Mean Green Starter (part #MG6600) $399.00

So far all the people who have done this install have not had any issues since, but I am waiting a while for a bit longer trial period.

Buddies fee for helping (Part # 2 cases of beer) $50.00

Thats an expensive and PIA fix, but eventually it has to be fixed.

Mean Green starters have been known to fix the issue, reman starters have been known to not fix a thing. when changing the starter it is best to stick with a brand new replacement. I had to change mine out a while back knowing the remans cause issues with grinding i stuck with a new one from Napa and have not had an issue with it once.

I was suppose to be getting a new one but I end up getting a reman. So I put it on hoping it would fix it. But no. So they are taking it back and getting me a new one. If it don't work... Looks like a new fly wheel for me.

My 03 did this as well and the reason this happens is our engines always stop in one of 4 places and this causes the teeth on the flywheel to wear down ever so slightly with the starter always engaging in one of these same 4 spots. IMHO changing the flywheel with the starter is the solution.

X2

This is why people had so much trouble fixing the issue.......changing the flywheel is a major PITA.

Well in getting a new fly wheel! I hate it so embarrassing!! Who makes the best after market flywheel? So Cal? Getting a stage 5 ppe trans at the same time.

Unless you're planning on doing a full engine build the stock flywheel should be just fine.

I'm having the same problem. Randomly but hasn't done it in few months. Pulled the trans recently to build it and no missing teeth on flywheel but it has sharp jagged slivers of metal on multiple teeth. Def worn some. I would def have to say it's the flywheel that is to blame mostly for this issue everybody is having. Although a new starter may help cause it engages harder and smoother and might be temporary fix for some.
