Hey guys, noticed this ticking sound earlier today ( I just bought the truck a few days ago) 2006 LBZ with 42k miles.

There were no parking spots near the apartment, so I stopped in front to drop off some groceries and heard it pretty loud so I took a video. (I checked earlier in the day with the hood open and I can't isolate where its coming from).

It's not always audible, seems to come and go. (Beginning of video phone is stuck inside passenger wheel well and for a few seconds it isn't making the noise, then it starts).

Sound seems equally loud on both sides. I was thinking maybe an exhaust leak, but it's too random...???

Edit: Was trying to post in the problems/issues subforum but somehow I got it here? Can't figure out how to delete either.

Hard to say but it sounds like the famous typewriter tick. If so my lmm does the same thing when it's cold, nothing to worry about. Some say it's more audible with dif oils, rotella is supposedly the most audible. Never ran it so I can't say, but my truck does seem quiter since I've switched to Mobil Delvac 1300 and still run acdelco filter.

Thanks guys, expecially you Jax. You've answered like every single thread of mine, lol. I guess I'm a bit paranoid. This truck has been the biggest purchase of my life so far (only 25). Also trying to start a business so I'm hoping to avoid any major issues especially with only 42k miles.

No prob always glad to help when I can. I understand being paranoid, bought my first diesel (cummins) when I was 22 and there is alot more noise than your used to compared to a gasser. Just stay on top of maint. and she'll treat you right. Good luck with your biz too.

with 6.6L Duramax(TM) Diesel Engine (VINs D, 1, 2 - RPOs LBZ, LB7, LLY)

Supercede:

This bulletin is being revised to add model years and remove RPO LMM. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 02-06-01-022G (Section 06 - Engine/Propulsion System).

Some of the above vehicles may exhibit a random ticking noise that is most audible on an engine with a coolant temperature of 70°C (158°F) or higher and from idle to approximately 1500 RPM. The noise usually is most noticeable at the rear of the drivers side front wheel well. Customers may also comment about hearing a tick noise inside the vehicle at idle such as when sitting at a drive through window. All 6600 Duramax(TM) diesel engines have this condition; however some are more audible than others. Engine build variation from engine to engine contributes to differences in perceived volume. All Duramax(TM) engines are manufactured to very close tolerances to meet the durability and reliability standards.

This noise is caused by the relationship of the engine cylinder block crankshaft journals bearing inserts and the oil film. This relationship may allow a vibration that resonates through the cylinder block and is heard as a metallic ticking noise. The noise could be described as an irregular ticking or clacking sound like random typing on a mechanical typewriter.

This condition has been present in diesel engines produced for the last 20 or more years. The overall noise reduction in engines produced today makes this noise seem new when in fact it was masked by other noises in the past. Many manufacturers such as Isuzu Hino Mitsubishi and Nissan report a similar condition in their diesel engines. Testing and engine teardowns with this condition reveal no condition that would affect reliability or durability of this engine.

Dealers should not attempt to compare any customer vehicles exhibiting this noise with other similar vehicles as the noise is different from vehicle to vehicle and this may lead to the incorrect conclusion that the vehicle has a condition. This noise is a normal operating characteristic of the engine. This noise has no short or long term effects on the engine. Do not attempt repairs for this noise.
Important: Replacing the engine or internal components for this noise will not reduce or eliminate the noise.

I changed my oil last week and before I changed it i noticed no tick. Now with "fresh" oil the tick is there. It does go away when the motor warms up tho. I may be switching brands. Rotella 15W-40 now, I will be switching to Delvac.

i just heard my truck doing this the other day when i was sitting in a parking lot at idle, i thought it was an exhaust leak at first till i got out and could tell it wasnt constant

i changed my oil about 2k ago with rotella 15w-40, looks like ill be switching to delvac next oil change

My lb7 with 162k does the same thing, it's very faint though. I can hear it more often while idling in traffic as the sound bounces off of other cars. I'm glad it's a a normal occurrence for the most part.

Damn it...if I would have read this first I wouldn't be having to post here since switching to Rottella 15w - 40 yesterday. My LMM sounds like a typewriter now.
Should have gone Delvac...looks like no more sneaking up on people in my Duramax until my next oil change or two. :)

my truck has been at the dealer for over a week and they could not fix this noise. its the d max tick . im glad i found this thread now i can relax !

also i only noticed this noise after i changed the oil with rotella! it was the only oil change i did on the truck besides the factory oil!

Tick on mine went away after about a 100miles. Ran 8oz of 2 stroke oil and recommended amount of diesel kleen at my last fill-up and now my truck is super liquid smooth. Also my injectors at idle are all between 1 of each other!!! I'm happy now and so is my truck.

After oil change tick is nothing to sweat, so long as you used the right stuff and your levels are fine.
