my gauge set up came with a temp sensor that can be put on the trans oil or coolent. i know the truck has the tranny and coolent. would oil be needed? or should i do the tranny to get a better reading on it?

Id put it on the oil if anything. The oil isnt really needed but it would be pointless to have 2 trans temp gauges IMO
