towing comparison

I towed 1100 miles to the track with my 2021 2500 14000 lb enclosed toy hauler, dealer delivered my 2024 3500 hd to the track and towed same rig home, the low end torque of the new motor is noticable top end at highway speed is about the same the 21 got 9.2 mpg towing the 2024 averaged 8.5 on the way home i had to order the 18 tires the 20 inch were on constraint the 2024 with 18 inch tires has more trailer sway.the active cruise is programmed well and worked good while towing it applies the trailer brakes and if someone cuts in front of you but is accelerating it does not apply the brakes the new dash is nice i have had no issues with the truck at 2800 miles, the 2021 got 20 mpg at 75 the 2024 gets about 19 unloaded seems like it lost 1mpg in all conditions,i had a 2019 and it was 1 mpg better than the 2021 i dont know why evertime they inprove the truck it gets worse milage,i dont care about the cost but my towing range went from 310 miles on the 2021 to 280 now so i had to adjust my gas stops on my trips.great truck so far

I went from a 19 2500 diesel to a 24 3500 hd diesel. I am also seeing a drop in the mileage. I lost 1-2 mpg towing the same camper. Normal driving is probably a 1-2 mpg drop also. Hopefully when it’s broken in more I will recover some of those mpg.

my 2021 never really got better milage after break in i traded it with 80000 miles
Any concern towing a heavy trailer right out the box? I know there are multiple schools of thought but.... i'm old school thinking old engines and break in was pretty crucial.

The differential needs 1k to break in. My understanding is too take that warning seriously. After 1k go balls to the walls!

My Motor seemed to finally loosen up around 18k on the Odometer. At that point as well my motor went from the quiet "sewing machine" to a real diesel with all the clatter. I picked up 1-2mpg consistently after that point unless I'm abusing the skinny pedal. I know everyone has different experiences though.

Biggest difference, you went from a proven Allison 6spd to a Ford developed, Allison branded, 10spd slush-box...

yesss, cause all the parts are interchangeable.

Couldn't help it. The only thing those two trans have in common is 10 speeds and a barrel design

It does seem to suck that there was a 1-2 mpg loss with the L5p going from the 6spd to the 10. But then again, why is it allot of us seem to think that if we get more horse power, torque, payload, greater acceleration and towing capacity that the mileage should be better too. At the end of the day Fuel burn creates energy.

Great side by side comparison, Thank you for sharing. I was wondering if you would be able to feel a noticable difference in the engine upgrades. I do wish the pre 24's had the adaptive cruise. Congrats not he truck
I just started towing with mine. only thing was I did a early oil change. I changed the rear diff fluid about 45k mark not a lot of metal on the magnet fluid looked good.

go use it. it's not a ford/dodge pos.
it's not a ford
Except for the 10spd transmission... :sneaky:

You're welcome Satar... ;)

it's been debunked over and over the gm / Allison 10 speed had zero input from ford

my 2021 i towed 14000 lbs at 100 miles on the truck across the country i traded it in with 80000 miles that truck never saw the dealer or had a problem and the diff fluid was original this one the dealer drove it to me about 300 miles so its more broke in than the last.

I agree, but these things are programmed with a lot of torque management. If they are going down the highway, they aren’t creating a ton more power. They should be more fuel efficient, unless you are using it to a degree to use additional energy.

just my .02

Ya know what Ford and China have in common?

There only good at reverse engineering. With that said, we already know ford couldn't have developed the HD 10spd without the knowledge of the 1/2 ton 10spd built in conjunction with GMC/Allison. And even after reverse engineering the layout of trans and the parts used are still different.

Anywho, enough derailment, there is already a thread for this.

Anyone else have solid comparison notes between the 2020+ and 2024 my's. Likes/Dislikes.
I thought Schwinn invented the 10-speed??
