Transmission fluid change help

Hello all, I have a 2021 3500 diesel. I jacked up my transmission pan this weekend getting high centered 4x4'ing and need to change it. Bottom of the pan is all mangled/dented up. I am assuming this is basically a transmission fluid change that includes dropping/replacing the pan. A few questions: How much fluid do I need? What are the torque values for the pan bolts. Is the pan gasket reusable? Is the filter inside the pan or external(if its internal I'm going to replace it since I'm in there)? Since I'm doing this in my garage, anybody have any good suggestions from personal experience on getting the fluid up to 167 degrees? I'm thinking fill it until it overflows, drive it to get it up to temp, pull it back into the garage and fill/drain as needed. Thanks for the help in advance!

The pan gasket should be rubber and yes it is reusable. There is an internal filter as well (get Allison brand filters). Should also be a spin on filter and attached magnet. Be sure to take the magnet off the old filter and install on the new filterafter cleaning it prior to installation.

As to the quantity of oil, why not simply measure the quantity you drain out and replace with a like quantity. These transmissions like to be a bit low NOT a bit high so you won't harm it any by taking a day or so to add a bit of oil at a time til you get it to the lower 1/4 of the hash marks on the dipstick.

Your filter is internal. No spin on filter for the 10sp. To fill with fluid there is a plug on passenger side about 2 or 3 inches above pan. Fill till it comes out of hole and your good. I would just drain it change pan and filter and refill unless you have a lot of miles on it. That transmission takes a special ultra low viscosity fluid and only dealers have it. Before you go about this make sure you have enough fluid on hand as some dealers don’t carry it. You might want to look into a PPE oil pan. They make one now for that transmission. Have fun.

Thanks for the help! Do you know how much fluid I will need? And just double checking, the gasket is reusable in the L5P 10 speed? I'm ordering all the parts online and want to make sure to get enough of the ULV fluid. I had thought about the drain and fill with the same amount approach, I've been doing that with my wifes SUV which has an even more convaluted way to refilling the transmission, and it's working great in that vehicle. Just don't know how much to order. The manual says absolutely nothing to help.

Here is a link to a Service Kit for your Allison 10 speed at the Duramax store.

it includes:15 Qts fluid, 1 pan gasket and 1 internal filter.

The procedure to change is about stupid. I really dont think ive had my tranny to 167deg towing in summer. They run pretty cool compared to the older allisons and waay cooler than the 10spd fords.

Got to be a way to not sit there and basically power brake it until its that hot and still attain proper level. I am not hard on my equipment and cant imagine doing that.

I've actually seen my temps up around 190deg, but that's towing about 13K over the Ike gauntlet. Otherwise, I can barely get it out of the 120's driving around town or to work(26 miles). Otherwise, I agree, these procedures for the newer transmissions are ridiculous!

Getting ready to do the swap out of the pan tomorrow. Does anybody know the torque specs for the tranny pan bolts and the check/fill hole bolt?
