Vibrations over 70 MPH

I have a 2011 Danali HD 2500 with 18000 miles. When I bought my truck in January I had a vibration over 73 MPH. Not sure where it's coming from. I thought it was the shaft out of balance or wheel out of balance. The dealer told me this is normal but Im beginning to believe otherwise. It is perfect from 0-70. Anyone else having this problem?

Got a call from my dealer this afternoon and in their words my truck now "drives as smooth as a baby's butt". They said a 1oz weight had fallen off of the left rear wheel which they corrected and re-balanced. I go tomorrow to pick it up but am still skeptical they actually addressed the problem based on what I know here. This truck has vibrated since the first day I drove it home. I'll post an update tomorrow after I pick it up. Fingers crossed...

I can't wait till tomorrow, go get it now. Jk
I am skeptical too, but have my fingers crossed. I don't think 1oz is enough.

Is there an objective way to test? Is there documented GM acceptable range for "normal"?

Well... took it for a ride with the service manager and the shop foreman, made them ride in the back seat so they can see the passenger seat shake. It started at 70 and gets worse till I get to 80. They were sticking to their guns that this is "normal, inherent to the HD trucks with HD suspensions, but they will do me a favor and road force the wheels/tires" again... there may be hard spots in the tires. If that is the case, what about the other two times they were balanced?
They then added that they can't/won't do it again because GM won't cover it under warranty. I don't want them to road force again, I want them to fix the vibration~!

A friend of a friend (credibility shrinking, I know) had an '11 with a vibration. Wound up totaling the truck after a drive shaft failure.

I purchased my 2011 3500 SRW crew cab 4x4 in May 0f 2011. I love this truck except for the vibration issue. As I have reported before, it is inconsistant. I have been driving at 70 smooth as silk and then punched the throttle and then the vibration starts. Stuff ike that - no rhyme or reason. I also have a 12k pound fifth wheel RV with a pin weight of about 2300lbs. While I tow at 65mph, I have gotten the speed up to 70 many times just to see if the additional weight in the bed makes any difference. It does not. I still get the vibration.
Once again, my '06 Dodge Cummins 4x4 quad cab with Michelin tires NEVER had any vibration at any speed the entire 40k miles I owned it. Something is up with these trucks. Whether GM knows what it is or not, we have to continue to report and document our problems. They have to come up with a solution to and fix these trucks. It is very uncomfortable and annoying. I can't believe that any rep from GM would say it is normal for a HD truck! Come on GM, I have already set up a case for mine but haven't heard a peep from you. Hello???? Phillip

2012 with vibration

Sounds like many people have been around and around on this before, but I have a problem child too. I have a 2012 Denali HD crew cab dually with the dmax/allison. I took it easy on the truck for the first 10k miles (2.5 months) to give it a chance to break in and get everything sorted out. Then, I hooked up my 3 car gooseneck and I have a horrible vibration under load even starting from a standstill. Living in Colorado, I have to start and stop on hills and this drivetrain vibration is bad enough that I'm worried it is going to tear the truck or trailer apart. The local dealer says GMC knows about it and is "working on it."

Is there anything I can do about this? I'm thinking I need to push them for a replacement truck, but that's pointless if they all do it. Then I need my $ back so I can go buy a dodge or *ahem* ford...

I would not drop 50k+ for a truck and keep dealing with this issue! They would be buying it back! I would extensively test drive the next one I liked before I bought it! By extensively I dont mean around the block! I would even tow what I plan on towing! If I couldnt find one that didnt vibrate, I would hate it, but I would have to go elsewhere!

You guys arent going to get any justice until you start getting into THEIR pockets and start turning these lemons in!

This is just crazy!

Sorry Sandman.

I picked mine up today, no difference. I don't think they even looked at the drive shaft like I asked. They reiterated the "normal" and "inherent to hd's" BS. My blood pressure can't handle this!

I am working on re-opening my ticket with GM Customer Service. Not sure why the ticket was closed or why he stopped responding to my voice mails....

This doesn't look very good.

I got two new tires today and it might have made a very very slight improvement. But still not fixed. Also took the manager on a ride after to confirm the vibration still there and he agrees. I will give the service manager credit on he hasn't given up on me or told me it's normal yet, but I am very frustrated to say the least. I am in Missouri and we do have the lemon law!! Not sure how that works though and really don't want to have to go that route. Rather just have my truck fixed....

Is there anyone out there that had the vibe issue then upgraded to aftermarket wheels/ tires. At least that would confirm or eliminate wheels/tires as the source.

#214 ·
If you go back and look at earlier posts in this thread, you'll see that people are having problems with their LML regardless of the the tire or rim size. People with 18" and 20" OEM wheels with many different manufacturers of tires are experiencing this. So, I think its safe to rule out tire or wheel problem. The slightly unbalanced tire or different size just exacerbates the issue, not the cause.

Here is the question. Any 2011 or 2012 2500HD gasser's having this problem or is it just the Duramax?

#215 ·
To the question about if gassers are having this issue or if it is the dmax. I don't know that answer. this is just my opinion on my truck, and I'm no mechanic by no means. My vibration seems to be speed related as opposed to rpm related which makes me think it's not the motor. At 72mph where I feel the vibration, I tried manually downshifting keeping the same speed and increasing rpm's and the vibration had no change. Just a thought.

#216 ·
I just started getting the vibration in my 2011 at just above 70, about 71mph on the stock speedo. Thought it was due to my lift, but I guess its not reading all of these other posts. Almost feels like a driveshaft balance issue or a bad carrier bearing I have experienced in other older high mileage RWD cars/trucks.

#218 ·
So you answered my earlier question as it looks like you are no longer running the stock wheels on your truck but are still experiencing the vibe. There was a lot of talk about difficulties with balancing the stock wheels and having to have the correct adapter on the balancing machine. I think that was likely a bunch of hot air.

I ran across this forum while looking for answers and wanted to join in...even though I don't have the duramax. My truck is a 2012 GMC 1500 Sierra Denali with the 6.2L vortec (20 inch wheels). It now has 1000 miles. I am having the exact same vibration issue. The passenger seat looks like it is about to shake off the mount at highway speeds. So...i don't think the issue is related to your trucks being a diesel or HD.

Traffic was light this morning. The shake stopped around 81-85, that's as fast as I went. There are a few slow curves that I was able to maintain 75-80 through today too. The shake got worse through the curve, not sure what that means though.

I got mine today as well and gave the dealership and service rep a good score but was honest and mentioned the problem wasn't fixed and I referenced the case number the Michelle from gm customer service on here have me. I got 2 calls within an hours from GM. Unfortunately I still need to bring it back to the dealer per their advice bit id just be honest

Nothing but bring it back in. The "specialists" that called was from a call center in Argentina. He had no valuable input. The first call I got was from my service dealer within 15 mins of me submitting the survey. Literally. GM called the dealer right after I hit submit and told them to call me. They just want me to bring it back in. Then an hour or so later Gabriel from Argentina called. I told both of them I dont want to do this back and forh crap from the dealer and be a guinnea pig while they "try" to figure it out. I asked them to bring this up the ladder to GM. I asked if there is anyone higher up that can admit there's an issue, etc...Everyone just kept repeating you need to bring it back in and that they need to keep working on it. I dont know what to do because its a real hassle. This crap takes time away from me and then I dont have a vehicle, again, for days.

What next when they can't figure it out? I have more faith in this forum and you all then the dealers who just want to keep cranking out warranty work. It's kinda like that downpipe leaking on here when it regens. Once "we" figure this out I'm happy to go in and get it fixed but until then I kinda feel its a waste of time. If I had some super aggresive mechanic that was bound and determined to figure this out thats one thing but I dont think they really care. GM, figure it out, put out a service bulliten and call them back in. It's cheaper in the long run b/c you dont have a bunch of pissed of GM owners. Don't get me wrong, I love my truck but it pisses me off I paid $60k for something that shakes like this down the interstate.

its either cvs, front axle cuz that spins all the time or rear drive line my 08 got a high speed vibe it was bad carrier

#230 ·
My truck doesn't do the high speed vibration but it does vibrate when taking off with a load.
I haven't tried to fix it yet but i'd be willing to bet it's in the driveline phasing / carrier alignment....

My truck started doing the same thing a few days ago at 74 MPH. It was the slip yoke coming out of the transfer case. Mine is significantly worn causing play between it and the bushing, but truck is smooth all the way to 74 MPH otherwise.

The other night I got on GM website and found a place to email my complaint about my truck. By the next morning I got a call from a gm rep and a specialist. That same day the specialist had also made some calls to the dealer service manager. No instant fixes but we set up a time to go back in first of the week to take another look at it and the specialist is doing a follow up call Tuesday. So there is some pressure being put on the service centers, and if the service guys are awnest in admitting the problem but no solution to the specialist maybe it will go a little higher up the chain. And from what I am hearing from the dealership is that customer satisfaction is very important to gm right now. So I'm thinking that for those who haven't set up a case yet about this problem to go ahead and call or email GM, trust me there watching. Maybe "strength in numbers" will help us. I know its a pain in the ass to keep taking or trucks in but we need to keep the pressure on them also to remind them vibration didnt magically fix itself. And I"m sure that for everyone of us on this forum with the issue there is a bunch more not on this forum with the issue. Just my .02 cents. On the plus side, this vibrating truck puts my 15 month old son to sleep better than his momma ever could!! 1 minute on the hwy and hes out. haha

Bdm300, can you post the same link you used here for others? That might be helpful if a lot of people file our complaints there as well...

#234 ·
Just go to GM.com Click on the "contact us" down in the lower right. Pick your flavor, chevy or gmc and then it will list the ways to contact them. Phone, mail, fax, email. I chose email because it has a premade form you fill out that gives them all the info they need to get started. Fill out all the boxes and state your complaint in the comments section. I'm sure there are other ways to contact them but thats what I used. Sorry for no link, not smart enough.
