Well, I went to adjust my headlights tonight and found this:

I ended up just puting on my stock intake again. I dont know if the prefilter helped this along, but I think that is what was dirtiest. So, I am now in the market for another aftermarket cone filter. So, any vendors that sell just the filter that will replace the AFE filter please send me a quote. I had a proguard 7 filter, but I dont really want to run it anymore just in case. I want to move to a dry filter...not oiled.

Here's another picture of it:

clean it? isn't that why people use oiled filters? I just run a PG7 in the stock box.

Wow! What do you think caused the air filter to crush that bad?

yeah i would, but I dont trust it to filter and not get further damaged now. It is caved all in. I think if I straightened it out, there would be holes in the filter, which would defeat the purpose. I want to go to a dry filter anyway....been holding off...well, this gives me incentive ;)

I think it was a little area crushed from removing and installing...I think the prefilter did it...although, I have only about 4 or 5,000 miles on my truck (maybe less) since I cleaned the prefilter. I have noticed my truck throwing a little more smoke when I get on it....I guess that is why. I was able to get on it pretty good yesterday. I'm thinking about getting the amsoil replacement, S&B filter, or the AFE dry...probably going with something other than AFE though

I would say it was the pre filter too. On my atv I have a K&N and the prefilter had gotten so dirty that the engine would not achieve full throttle and just bog down. Gotta keep an eye on the damn things.

I have the afe dry filter and it has worked great for me so far.

I know S&B makes dry disposable filters. Don't know if they'll fit your AFE? I love my S&B though.... It' helps that it's in a box with a clear lid, so you can see if anything is wrong with it.

I know amsoil makes a similar replacement for my K&N intake. Im just not too sure on how good of a filter that is.

re-filter..

I went back to stock as well. I had an AFE, it was starting to colapse as well. The stock unit seems to work as well if not better. A while back someone posted some test results for stock and aftermarket. I wish I would have known about that report before I spent the big money on the AFE.

I thought AFE filters had a lifetime warranty? Couldnt you just call them up and get another one. I know K&N does it.

Yeah i think they do, but I bought my intake off of ebay about 5 years ago. I'm sure they will say something about it being dirty and voiding the warranty on it. I am going to see about the Amsoil filter. I want to go to a dry filter anyway. I dont want to have something go through my turbo.

I'm sure I could clean and use it, but I dont trust it at this point.

I just looked up the warranty on the AFE intakes and filters....it's only 2 years on a cold air intake. Here is their warranty policy from their site:

9. What is the warranty on my aFe part?
aFe OE replacement filters are warranted against manufacturer defects for as long as you own the vehicle and it is properly maintained using our filter cleaning kit. Our universal clamp on air filters and air intake kits are warranted against manufacturer defects for 2 years. Our racing filters are warranted against manufacturer defects for 1 year. All warranty is contingent on proper installation and proper maintenance using our restore kit. All other aFe products such as our exhaust systems, intake manifolds and intercoolers have a 2-year warranty.

Scott, depending on the deminsions of the filter, AMSOIL offers universal replacement filters for a lot of different applications. You can check them out HERE I used one of these filters to replace a AFE ProDry on a K&N intake and I have to say I was pleased with how little dirt it held. The AFE and K&N filters seemed to simply collect dust, but the EAA Universal filter did not. Not sure why that is, the K&N is a wet gauze, but the AFE I used was dry, so IDK.

I also used it without the Prefilter, but then again I don't see a lot of dirt roads and dusty conditions.
