I am in the market to purchase a used 3/4 ton diesel truck...

Looking at the Duramax 4x4 crew cab with an automatic. But I have heard from friends that there are specific models to stay away from(they do not know why). Can anyone shed some light on the things that they say?

Depending on your pricerange, i would look for an LBZ or newer truck. They have 0 known problems.(2006-2010)
The LB7 had injector issues and the lly is said to have head gasket problems.(2001-2004)

Is there a way to tell what engine is in one by just looking at it? Where is the Engine code generally located? Most of the trucks that I have been looking at are on craigslist... not dealers... so mos people do not know their engine codes.

go by year. 01-04.5 LB7, 04.5-05 LLY, 06-06.5 LLY(detuned LBZ), 06.5-07.5 LBZ, 07.5-2010 LMM.

well the 07.5 one is simple cuz they changed the body style. The 06-07.5 are all the same motors just the early 06 had a different tune for the horsepower and torque than the 06.5-07.5. IM not sure on the 04.5 but usually model years start in August so maybe February?

I read somewhere else that the LBZ (new LLY) started in 06; however, it's not clear if the engine was installed in the beginning of calendar year 2006 or when the 06 models came out in 2005. In other words, would the first 06 model sold in 2005 have the new LLY (detuned LBZ)? Any way to clarify this?

Also, how do you verify the engine model by either looking at the engine or at the VIN?
