01 2500 Diesel 50K new owner...I am going through and changing all fluids and filters. Changed the fuel filter (challenge in itself, accomplished with a web-type oil filter remover)...poured clean fuel from old filter into clean container...removed bottom water sensor from old filter and installed in new filter with new o-ring..filled new filter with fuel from clean container...inspected upper o-ring and gasket...installed new filter in vehicle...primed and bled...attempt start. Got a short burst of cranks, no start...then complete shutdown. No starter solenoid, no elec on the dash, some clicking near the under dash fuse box when key is removed. It acts like the batteries are completely dead but this is not possible. Please help!!! Best

wow... i would never transfer the fuel from the old filter to the new one... but... whatever works... there is some other problem than the filter change going on... did you bump any other wired connections during the install?? did you check the voltage on your batteries?? This sounds a little odd....

I must have bumped something...I installed the filter through the gap in the fender well...done in the first try after several frustrating tries from the top. Looking at the area again I noticed what I believe are several golw plugs. Could I have bumped (grounded) a glow plug and discharged the battery?? I dont have a multi-meter but the dash voltmeter moves slightly but is below 9v. Should I just try jumping it? Any precautions? Thanks

Ignition off no probs...I agree. However, I did get a few short cranks before complete shutdown. I think this points to the glow plug causing discharge. I went and looked at the area and moved glow plug terminals away from the block...I didn't notice any touching the block. Could the glow plug have discharged the batt that quick?? Does not seem likely.

I had the same problem with mine and after i got fed up with screwing around trying to prime it i just gave it one small shot of starting fluid and it fired right up. THIS really isnt good on diesels at all cuz it can screw a lot of things up but very very small amount wont hurt. But thats your call if you wanna do that.

No lights with keys in on position...just lots of clicking behind the under dash fuse pnl when I remove the keys. I also spoke with the prev owner regarding this...he never had this prob.

kiddd2....no remote starter. Also, clicking behind fuse pnl goes away with keys in ingition. Is there a sensor for air in the fuel lines?? Does it disable ignition circ? Somehow ignition circ is disabled. Should I pull the batt cable off to save the relay behind the fuse pnl??

I wouldnt think there would be a sensor for air in fuel lines. Maybe some how a fuse was blown that might deal with the circuit. I would make sure the batties are fully charges because it take a lot to turn them over. Each battery should have 12.6 volts when fully charged. I really dont know a hole lot on duramax engines, i am a ford tech and i usually work on 7.3 and 6.0's i'll check it out on that link i sent you
