2015 black flakes in coolant reservoir

While deleting my truck with only 2,400 miles I notice that my coolant reservoir had small black flakes that had settled at the bottom. I decided to siphon a few out to inspect. The flakes are non metallic and do not seem to be rubber. I think that these flakes are paint (very thin) but from where? Has anybody seen this on their duramax?

Couple more pics. Their is a paper punch dot net to the flake to show size comparison.

I doubt its a head gasket on a new truck like that... Prob. just residual from the inside of the radiator or the hoses...

I just had the dealer change the oil at 2,300 miles. The oil in the motor now has 229 miles on it but I will inspec and report back. I did call PPEI and they seem to be confident that beings the truck has yet to see any additional power and 0 miles tuned. I may still get this covered under warranty if I return to stock now. I plan to check the upper hose after a good warm up and will also report back.

GM will use anything they can to get out of paying for that, the fact that the factory tuning has been modified will be more than enough for them to tell you to pony up the cash.

Interested to hear the outcome, but even if you return back from deleting and GM decides to hook up to that ECU, you're more than likely going to have to bite it...if it's something serious, but I'm doubting it is anything major. Good luck and let us know the result!

Well the dealer has ordered me a new oil cooler for my truck. Apparently GM has seen this before in a few of the new models. It will still be covered under warranty.

I did not get any more details. I picked the truck up at closing time and was told it was safe to drive for now. It was my impression that this oil cooler had a coating or defect inside of the coolant passages that is causing the issue. The new part should arrive first of next week. After the old has been removed I will inspect and possibly take pics if i can see where the issue was. I still plan to have an oil analysis done in the next few weeks that should tell me for sure if i have a head gasket issue and this was indeed not the fix.

So the dealer has now pulled and replaced the oil cooler. The coating that was used inside of this one is no longer being used. Pretty obvious this was the problem.

Oh wow look at that.
Good catch for a dealer, they usually are just glorified parts changers.
Thanks for the follow up, I am pretty sure everyone will appreciate it.

This thread should be moved into the LML powertrain section. Great info for anyone with an LML! Thanks for posing this, I've checked mine and so far nothing in the coolant tank...

Woah... Impressive for the dealer to be on top of that. Glad they took care of it for you!

I am pretty relieved that it was just the oil cooler. Dealer flushed the entire coolant system and even changed the oil again to make me happy.

I am not sure what the TSB would be but I do know GM has seen this issue before and knew exactly what it was to fix the issue. The flakes will settle to the bottom of the tank I know that for sure. I maybe able to find my paper work if that will help anyone.

I'd like to have a LML, but after seeing so many goofy problems here and there, makes me glad to have a 10yr old Dmax.

Bypass oil filter and bypass coolant filter would have to go on the new truck, along with a Fass...

Heres to tunes and deletes!!!

It doesn't seems to be necessary to replace the oil cooler if it's just the coating. You've gotten a decent dealer nearby.

So the oil cooler was the cuplprit?

I had mine in and they just flushed the coolant and said wait for a TSB to come out......

Gonna check my coolant today but have not noticed anything. Then again, now that I know that the flakes settle to the bottom I'll go ahead and squeeze the hose to see what i can get to rise to the surface.
