2020 GMC 2500HD Torque Converter Issues

I have a 2020 GMC Denali 2500HD (diesel) which has around 9600 miles. Last week I noticed some small spots in my garage, so I crawled underneath and found transmission fluid leaking. i called my local GM dealer and got it in. They said that it was a torque converter seal and they had the part ordered and should be able to get it in this week. I picked the truck up today and they told me that even though they replaced the seal, the leak was still there. So now, they have ordered a new torque converter with the assumption that the one that came on the truck from the factory must have been cast improperly causing the seal to not function properly.

Has anyone else has this issue? I am hoping once the new torque converter is put it, my issue will be resolved. I really don't want this to turn into an issue where my truck is in the shop every other week (even though it's all warrantied).

Hoping I don’t have same issue, I notice after long highways trips there is a drop of oil on the inspection plug but doesn’t appear to have a red tinge, it looks like fresh clean motor oil (assembly lube?). Pulled the inspection plug and looked inside with a mirror and everything looks. Dry. Will keep and eye on it and setup an appointment if it comes back again.

2020 GMC Sierra 2500 AT4 HD Duramax.

I was changing the oil today and as usual noticed red tranny fluid on the bottom of the transmission near the oil pan. I never see any on the ground of the garage and have seen a drip there at each oil change and usually wipe it off and think nothing of it. I have a little over 24,000 miles (maybe 2,000 of that towing). What concerns me is that just this week I started noticing what feels like slipping and hard shifts on occasion. A couple times I’ve had it give me a good ol’ 2018 8spd kick in the rear when changing gears this week which is not normal behavior for this transmission. Then last night on my way home, I went to accelerate from a red light and when I pushed the accelerator, the truck sort of lunged or surged for a couple seconds like it wanted to go but wasn’t locked in a (or the right) gear.

I’ve made an appointment for the 26th to see what is up, but after reading these forums, I’m starting to think that red drip was the sign of problems to come, which may have arrived.

As you can tell from the picture you can see the red drop, but the cover also has quite a bit of fluid on it…enough I could rub my finger around in it.

Hello dfciii

Today, on my 2020 Dually Diesel with only 1900 miles, put it in gear, it felt like I was spinning on ice with one wheel until the differential lock grabbed and then I could move. (Actually stopped and got out of the truck to look if one wheel was spinning on something.) Went half a mile down road, made a turn and it did the same thing accelerating. Revved engine a few times while in gear trying to accelerate, no response. Maybe transmission gear clutch pack or torque convertor issue? Engine light came on also. Cycled the key a few times and drove home 7 miles no trouble after that.

Have you found out anything about your truck? I may start a new post with this problem as it looks like I'm not the only one.

Yes - ice - that’s exactly how it felt - like it was just sitting there spinning. It’s driven fine the last few days as well as on my long road trip back home from visiting family, but the oil leaking is what I want to know. There shouldn’t be any tranny fluid anywhere and these trucks have no dipstick to check.
My service appointment is Tuesday and I’ll update the thread as soon as I hear something - hopefully not “we can’t replicate the problem.”

I did not get any check engine light.

I have been monitoring mine and since giving the outside and inside case a good cleaning it hasn’t come back in 1000 miles. Mine never appeared red fluid, it was almost like when the ujoint on the front drive shaft warmed up it whipped grease on that general area as it was on oil pan and same thing from ujoint by transfer case, there was a very specific line.

If it comes back by next oil change we’ll make an appointment with the dealer.

Different model, but my old '17 had the torque converter replaced at 400 miles.

The fluid was red, so it was transmission fluid. It would put a few drops on the shop floor and there was always a little at the bottom of the bell housing mating surface.

They said that they found a machining imperfection in the TQ snout where the seal surface rides.

Ok - verdict is in. Dealer said the front pump (no clue what he is referring to here) is defective and the torque converter, front pump, seal plate, and cover along with an assortment of other trinkets is in need of replacement. They have some of the parts and the rest are 5-7 days lead from Texas, so the little red drop was surely a sign of trouble to come. Fortunately, it is under warranty, however, the transmission is no longer included in the powertrain warranty. The new revised powertrain warranty only covers parts the engine oil touches, so I hereby advise anyone with this 10spd/Duramax combo to crawl underneath and check that plate at the bottom of the transmission and the surrounding bolts for fluid or signs of residue before you get to 36k miles.

Side bar: the dealer is hot for my truck and sales was all over me the second I drove in, and have offered me more than it retailed for new and nearly $20k more than I owe. They have offered to buy it today and loan it back to me to use for however long it takes for a new custom order 2022 redesign to come in. Seems like a pretty darn good deal and since I work from home and don't tow, my truck is more or less a toy for me. To put it into perspective, they told me there are only 5 similarly equipped AT4 HD's on the market. They got a 21 (same equipment as mine) in yesterday used with 14k miles and are listing at $85k and expect it to sell by the weekend. Can anyone else say this car market is on the verge of mental illness?

Where did you hear this? This is what the 2020 warranty booklet says. If the entire transmission were excluded from the powertrain coverage, I would think it would be listed under "Exclusions".

Transmission/Transaxle Coverage includes:
All internally lubricated parts, case, torque converter, mounts, seals, and gaskets as well as any electrical components internal to the transmission/transaxle. Also covered are any actuators directly connected to the transmission (slave cylinder, etc.).

Exclusions:
Excluded from the powertrain coverage are transmission cooling lines, hoses, radiator, sensors, wiring, and electrical connectors. Also excluded are the clutch and pressure plate as well as any Transmission Control Module and/or module programming.

I had to fight them on the Trans Control Module when mine needed a new one. Why would a control module not be covered? Can't run without it. I actually, told them if tey don't cover it to remove it from the truck. They then decided to cover it.

I agree with you that it should be covered (and good on you for getting them to cover it). But, at least that's consistent with their published exclusions from the powertrain warranty. That's a far cry from excluding the entire transmission as was suggested in a post above.

Fingers crossed. The cure may be in.
After 16 days for a “quick, 10 min fix”, I have the Big Blue Bish back. 43 mile drive home and I see tranny fluid leaking from the service panel AND the rear driveshaft seal coming off the tranny.
Hoping it was just residual from the work. Wiped it down last night.
No leaks this morning. No leaks after driving…yet.
Now off to the body shop to finally get the hail damage repaired. New hood. New roof. New rear quarters. New A arm pillars. New windshield.

What’s another 10 days without the truck? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I finally made the mistake of bringing my truck in to get the leak fixed. They had it for about 3 weeks and did the TSB for the leak. Had it home for a week (the truck isn't used during the week). Used once and the leak came back worse than before. Took it right back. Now it's been about over 4 months in total the truck has sat at the dealer, now waiting on a torque converter that's on backorder. They think it will be at least another month. Tried to trade it in at the dealer on a different truck, they didn't even want it because they have no idea when they would be able to sell it.

Last week my wifes new 22 suburban z71 had a total brake system failure at less than 5k miles. Almost caused a serious accident, when she had about 20% brakes trying to stop before a busy intersection. It's stuck at the dealer waiting on a backordered master cylinder and brake booster. I'm done with GM.

GM seems to drop the ball when it comes to customer service. We bought an Audi back in sept. Engine ate itself at 1300 miles beginning of November. Engines on back order with no estimate. Dealer gave us back MSRP on the car told us to pick another off the lot. Still had TT&L, but better than waiting months and doing lemon law.

welp. heard from dealer today. seal on the torque converter was leaking. they said 3-5 more days to get parts so it should be completed in 2 weeks. 4 weeks in and out to get that fixed.

crazy that it was leaking after 18k miles. I'm guessing it was messed up from the factory when it was originally built.

on plus side, they fixed a recall I didn't know about, fixed my top part of the tailgate, and fixed the high idle switch.
