Anybody towing heavy 5th wheel (14k+) with a 2022 2500 duramax?

Hi Everyone- I just purchased my second duramax, this one is a 2022 Silverado LTZ crew cab with factory
gooseneck / 5th wheel prep. 20 inch OEM wheels and tires.

The Jayco Pinnacle Im looking at weighs only 14,330 with a dry pin weight of 3290.

My truck door sticker shows 18,500 tow capacity (which most, if not all 2500 duramax's reflect)
HOWEVER, my payload number is only 3114 !
I used this chart I found on the web and another one on fifth wheel magazine website and both have a
a formula that indicates I would be an unsafe tow - 1076 over weight. when I plug in the numbers.
Very concerning.

I have essentially the same payload in my 2022 at4. I’m currently towing a 2022 fuzion 424. Recently went to the cat scales and I’m quite a bit over weight. My pin weight was 4600lbs and camper weighed 19000 with all our stuff and water. I have airbags in the rear which levels it out. Honestly the truck handled the load fine and I never felt any concerns. However I just listed is as i feel a drw will be more appropriate.
I think in your case I’d run it with some airbags and it should be fine

So you have a SRW 2500 correct ? AT4 only comes in SRW correct ? Is yours a 3500 / 1 ton ? What bag system do you recommend and who to install ?

I'd recommend you keep an eye on your tire weight ratings. With that much pin weight, I suspect you'll be over on your tire ratings and be risking a blowout. There are higher capacity tires available, up to 4080lbs/tire on standard sizes and higher if you opt for 19.5" wheels. Airbags or some other form of suspension enhancement will likely also be necessary.

Your dry pin weight is also not reflective of your loaded pin weight. Our trailer has a dry pin weight of 3500lbs, and loaded up the trailer crosses the scales at around 4000lbs of pin weight, without any water. That puts our 2017 3500HD right at the limit of the rear tires, scaling at around 8000lbs on the rear axle.

It's worth noting that while our truck handles the current weight fine, we're looking at picking up a DRW. It's better to have the extra capacity and not worry about pin weight anymore than to constantly consider how the trailer is loaded.

I towed a 5th wheel that scaled very close to the weights you stated with a 2020 3500 SRW. It did ok but I never felt relaxed towing and was constantly on alert for things around me and planning my next move as it was not comfortable. The truck was bagged but still uncomfortable.

I upgraded to a 2022 DRW, bagged it and have not looked back. It is day and night and I have 99% less stress towing and actually look forward to heading out.

2500's have decent tow capacity but not real good payload capacity. Makes them not ideal if fifth wheel towing is your plan. Also the reason I settled on a 3500.

The good thing is since you purchased a 2500 and now know your trucks abilities and haven't purchased the fifth wheel yet you can downsize the trailer to match the truck. The horse determines the carriage or the carriage determines the horse, guess it depends on which you own first.

Will the 2500 handle it? like others have said most likely, will it handle it like it should, likely not compared to a 3500.

Thanks for your reply. I don’t plan on moving this rv much since we are primarily seasonal.
I think I’ll bag as for what I’m hearing, it should help improve the ride and help to level things out better.

I fill manually. I put a T in my air line so both bags equalize when adjusting pressure. I ran my airline so that the fill point is inside the box near the 5th wheel power plug. I played around measuring sag and adjusting pressure to find what was optimal for my set up.
I have an aluminum air tank that I always carry anyway so filling is no issue.

Did you have to drill some holes through the bod floor or side of box to get the
air lines in there ?
Do you ride with bags empty with no load and what psi do run with trailer attached ?
tailer a fifth wheel as well ?

I routed the air line along the wiring for the 5th wheel power supply and the fished it up through the opening in the rear corner of the bed (stake pocket area) I only had to drill one small hole for the valve stem fill. My truck has the multi pro? tailgate so I positioned the fill so it cleared the folding handle that you use to assist climbing into the bed but close enough to it so it would protect it if something was rolling around in the bed.

I run 10 psi when using for everyday things like hauling lumber etc.. When towing my 5th wheel if I have nothing in the garage I run 45 psi and if I have a load in the garage of the trailer 35psi is perfect as weight in the garage takes some weight off the pin.

Order the air bags with the bump stop built in so that way if you lose air pressure or forget to add air it will hit the bump stop and not bottom the bags out.

Are you ok? Maybe. I see 3/4 ton trucks at every park that are hauling fifth wheels that I think should be dually. What you have to ask yourself is how much risk are you willing to put you, your family and others at by not having enough truck per the manufacturer, not anecdotal evidence of others. From my standpoint, the max weights are there for a reason.

If you’re a risk taker, throw your family in, hookup and go. If you lean towards being safe, take the truck back and get a 3500 or even a dually. If this is your first RV, you’ll also be heading back in a year or two for something bigger.

I had very similar setups but once I got up and around the Rockies I immediately ordered a 3500 DRW just for the mere stability, made all the difference on the ride. Fifth wheels run so smooth especially towing with a dually.
