Considering a used 5500HD or International CV - L5D what to look for

New to the forum, great site. I'm in the market for a used Class 5 truck for my business. I initially ruled-out a newer diesel with emissions, figured I'd stick with gas or go with a pre-emissions diesel.

I'm finding that a pre-emissions truck with the right specs in decent condition is hard to find. So I've been looking closer at the gas 19.5k lb GVWR trucks - Ford with a V10 (maybe 7.3) and a RAM with a 6.4 V8. I keep coming across some Chevy 5500HD/International CV trucks - there is no gas option, just the Duramax.

I like the truck - tilt hood is nice and I prefer the straight frame. Just don't know about the Duramax. It looks like the L5D which I read is de-rated L5P if I got that right.

Most of what I read on the L5P seems fairly positive. Are there any weak spots with this engine that I'm missing? Within my budget truck would have 100k miles or so. Anything I should be looking for on an L5D at this mileage. Any idea what kind of mileage I could expect in a 5500 HD at GVWR weight?

My most recent pickups are/have been Ford, but I'm not that impressed to not look at the Chevy/International or a even a RAM. Thanks in advance for any comments.

The cab and chassis new/leftover is less than the 3500 pickups. The money's in the upfit. The L5D is "detuned" but better transmission and axle ratios make it very good and no doubt ther have many miles in them at rated power... the cabs are the same as the 15-19 2500/3500 so no lack of options or improvements.. the other thing is wheelbase 60"CA are a little harsh in the unladen ride dept. 84" CA are dramatically better. Maintenance access is great. I've got about 3000 miles on my 4500 and i like it better than my 2500 Denali.. it rides better and has more power... I've lifted mine 3" and went to gas charged Bilsteins and the ride further improved... oh yeah if you can find one with the air ride cab you will be impressed... only one issue with mine and that happened with less than 40 mils on it.. after picking it up from the dealer... it was a leftover '23 and the def injector and suppliy line were crusted up and clogged from setting 9 months... a liitle hot water and a regen and all was good no help from the dealer. I daily drive it and tow 14K or less with it often... and it actually loves towing and you won't feel 5K back there... My truck is 9500 as i drive it on a 14K GVW (derated rear springs is the only difference i see than the 5500) it's averaging 12 around town and 20 on the highway... it is speed limited to 79mph... does not seem to matter much with 5 or 14K trailer load behind it... in comparison my old '16 Denali 6.0 gasser got 8-10mpg with the same loads behind it and was working hard and marginal 19-21 empty below 65 mph...

The mini and trailer are around 5500 lbs and the track loader/old trailer were around 13.5K depending.. my new aluminum trailer will get that down to 10.5 K

agreed so you really wanna get the build sheet and the RPO codes... and for instance the 4500/5500/6500 4x4 all share the same front axle, there are 3 different rear axle families with different options and capacites, a multitude of spring packages, three transmissions with different programming and componets for service type, and the GVWR and GCWR numbers game options... and remember these are hauling trucks not necessarily towing trucks by default... I've upgraded the IO5 radio to the non orderable RPO IO6 HMI to get the onboard NAV and added the transfer case skid plate it was RPO NZZ or NZO I can't remember... at some point i will have to hack the linux box that is the IO6 HMI and create a map update if no one else does it as they are discontinued from GM in 2023 and I have a $200 android box that gives me all the android cool apps and wireless carplay all pretty seamlessly off the IO6 HMI
