is there a easy way to delete the DEF system on a 2012 denali? Im debating about buying this truck but I am very much wanting to avoid the headaches of putting this fluid in the truck so often. Ive heard they make tuners and delete kits but cant find anything online?? someone help please.

Are you wanting to delete the DEF or DPF?

DPF is the diesel particulate filter. I know you can delete those but I'm not sure on the DEF. You will have to run a programer ,like H&S, to delete the DPF so the truck won't throw codes and go into limp mode.

Do you know if your state has smog inspections? I know some places make it difficult on people that want to mod their trucks. Also, depending on the mileage on the truck, aftermarket mods could effect the trucks warranty. I'm not trying to change your mind on deleting this stuff because in the long run deleting the emissions equipment will help the longevity of the motor. In addition to the DEF and DPF you might also want to look into EGR delete or block and PCV reroute. This keeps the sticky ,abrasive soot from being directed back into the motor. But again to do any of these mods you will first have to have a programmer to block the codes that will come form the deletes. Unfortunately the tuning options for the LML's are not as good as the previous d-maxs.

currently pa does not have any smog. the truck has 14K. I don’t have any problems with warranty. I work for a good size GM dealership. but I just got rid of my LLY lifted up on 37s and I want a nice truck. just don’t this stupid def fluid all the time.
I'm not being an ass so don't take this the wrong way.......

You work at a good sized GM dealership and bought a 60K truck yet don't know much about it. Not understanding DEF and DPF and owning an LML tells me a salesman put the moves on you. It also sounds like you've been listening to the RAM dealers on the radio here in AR saying 2012 last year for the Hippy Juice free trucks and they go on to bash Ford and GM for having it stating how much more operating cost it is. To be honest, it is an operating cost but the price of the DEF is very low per mile(for my rig anyway). The extra you pay for diesel far outweighs the cost of DEF. I kind of like not having the black smoke...That's just me.

No issues with warranty? That's because you don't have the MOD yet. If you remove the emissions and have a problem you may very well have an issue with the warranty. Maybe you have a "hookup" at said dealer or maybe you THINK you have a hookup at that dealer. You will not know till the buck stops if or when there's a problem.

The EPA came down hard on the turner makers. They all got cease and desist orders (so I'm told) and that's a nice way of Big Brother saying STOP NOW OR ELSE. There is always a chance the EPA can force all the turner makers to handover the purchasing records and go after the end users.....like DTV and Dish hack in the hacking days.

All diesels will have both DEF and DPF by 2014 or they'll not be made. The EPA was very clear on that. Ask the farmers how they feel about that. My brother-in-law runs a large John Deere dealership......everyone is pissed....

You have a nice truck now....lift it and put 37's on it and roll.....The emissions isn't keeping you from doing that. You have almost 400HP without the tune which is more than enough to light up 37's.

I've had 17K trouble free miles (stock truck) mileage is outstanding and I add $12 worth of DPF every 5-6K miles (when I get the 999 message).

Not bashing anyone for what they want to do to THEIR truck...just offering a different opinion......

Not to derail this thread but it kinda goes hand in hand.

I've been thinking about since I ordered my XRT Pro...all going in 1/21. I'm deleting the DPF obviously but I'm going to leave the DEF tank in. I'm leaving the EGR in too just in case I ever need to go back. I know, the computer will always say I've tuned it but I've heard there are ways around that too...I'm at least leaving it all in for a little while. Maybe we can delete it all when I put a lift in down the road.

Anyways, I topped her off a couple months ago and I probably have about 2-3 gallons left in it. I've heard the DEF goes bad after a year or so. Any recommendations here? Siphon it out or drain it somehow probably?

I bought a 2013 a month ago. I was asking a diesel tech at a dealership about warranty stuff. He said anytime you take your truck in for any warranty work (no matter whats its on) they take a snap shot of the ecm and send it to GM.

Not sure if that's true or not

You're not going to get worse than 10mpg, but you're probably not going to get 18 either. If you use it as a daily driver on city and suburban streets, don't expect much better than about 15 if you're lucky. Its a big powerful truck and its fun to drive.
DEF is a fact of life, and you'll fill it when it asks for it. Just don't get it at the dealership if the dealership it in the city because the dealership won't likely have a massive amount of diesel customers like in the country (unless PA is different from FL). In FL the city dealership's stash of DEF is not replenished very often and it gets old and doesn't last that long. Owners can get Poor quality DEF messages on the ECM, and they have to get it flushed at the dealership at quite a cost. Rather get you DEF at an auto parts store where the stock turns faster.

Ultimately I am saying that you may want to stick with the DEF system if your heart is set on one of these trucks. Its not a bad thing, keeps the atmosphere clean and all that, and the alternative is expensive. The mods are expensive and illegal, bottom line! ...and your warranty is history. These trucks are pretty cool from the factory in my opinion.

I agree and there isnt really anything I want to get rid of besides the DEF stuff. maybe its worth it just to keep the def and the truck factory. this truck will be far from a daily driver. it will be for tow use 90% of the time. towing either the wave runners or the 24ft enclosed car trailer. it will prob see 10K per year. 99% highway use.

just to inform you since you dont know... the DEF (diesel exaust fluid) is the fluid injected into the dpf to help further reduce the NOX produced by the engine. the DPF (diesel particulate filter) is there to catch all the soot, or black smoke, from entering the atmosphere. IMHO i think you should delete it because the emissions of a diesel vs a gas truck are barely different when not equiped with emissions equipment. if you get an h&s tuner then you have the option of adding power with the dpf present and deleted. it also disables the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system.

the benefits of deleting the DEF/DPF system is the fact that with the tuning you will see a fuel economy increase along with power. however it voids any powertrain warranty you might have. diesels have what they call a "black box" that only dealerships have access to and can see the highest load % of the engine and other items that they can use to determine if you have ever had a chip/programmer on your truck.

i say delete the dang thing

What do you mean by 'so often'?

DEF usage is typicallly 1200-1500mpg and rated capacity is 5.3 gallons. I realize some heavy trucks and off-road equipment need to add def every couple of days, but the LML typically only needs to add def every 5000-8000miles.

Def is readily available at ALL trucks stops and MANY auto parts stores. It typically is about $4 per gallon, and most commonly sold in 2.5 gallon jugs. If purchased at the def pump at a truck stop it will be even cheaper. Dealers charge about double the aftermarket price.

youwill need to buy a DPF delete pipe if you run the delete tune. otherwise the DPF will get clogged and cause serious problems. its not difficult to do. just some bolts and sensors. there are a lot of how tos online and on youtube.

i also forgot to mention the EPA. they cracked down hard on diesels, like someone mentioned earlier in this thread, and the tuners are easy to find on performance websites but you have to fill out a waiver that states you will use your truck for racing/offroad purposes only. this waiver just covers the websites butt so they dont get shutdown.

but there are so many diesels that run deletes on the road so it doesnt really matter unless the EPA happens to follow you around everywhere and discovers that you arent offroad with the truck.

if you are looking for better mileage since you said all you want to do with the truck is tow and want to keep your dpf/def system and stay legal, then might i suggest a water/methanol injection system. its also known as a boost cooler. it gives you the same mileage and power increases as a tuner and is warranty safe.

right now alligator performance has a sale on dpf delete pipes about 200 for a pipe.

and extreme diesel performance has the tuner for about 1000. and for the lmls you have to purchase the dpf delete unlock code and it runs about 100

it is markup on the tuner but well deserved since the lml isnt able to be tuned by efi

You only have to add DEF about every 5-7k miles. Its really not a hassle. If you want to keep the warranty you can't delete the DEF or DPF because it will void your warranty. If there are low miles on the truck, it might be more of a headache to run with no warranty. Im keeping mine stock for longevity (with the exception of resonator delete and K&N intake.)
