I have said a contributor to failing GP’s is low voltage and high amps from batteries… BUT!!!!

the primary issue is the GP controller….

nearly every failure has been when I go from off to crank without pause at “run”… especially when cold.

Uggh. I'm sorry you had so many glow plug issues. I had hoped GM had them fixed by the time the L5P came around but it does not appear so. How many miles did you have on your truck when they started going out?

It's been my single consistent issue with my 17. I've had 1 failure every year since new. 93k on it now. Just went in sometime in April for the 4th failure.

Did GM extend warranty on the glow plugs for the 2017's? Mine are constantly failing.

I have the same issue with my 2017 L5P, I only have 59000 on it. I got one replaced last week, cost me 500 bucks ans it was now out of warranty. The check engine light is back. This will make #7 for the life of the truck. I will most likely chance it myself.
I sure hope the extended Warranty is expanded the 2017s.

$500 for a glow plug? Must have been one behind the EGR. Otherwise it's a $30 plug and a 30 minute job.

It was 2.5 hrs labor. So it must have been that one Thanks! I am taking it in this afternoon to get code checked etc.

So I have a #5 glow plug fault on my 2018 Chevy. It’s at the dealer now getting replaced. The dealer informed me that it is covered under this extended warranty however they must do a software update for the glow plug controller that is not covered under the warranty. I find it odd that follow-on mx and/or software updates for this related problem is not covered. Has anyone experienced this or is this BS?

I have had glow plugs replaced in my '18 under the extended warranty without having to pay for any programming.

A couple years ago, we had cold weather and 3 trucks in our community of around 15 trucks had 3 failures of the #7 GP. Silly to think it’s a “problem”???

Did GM extend warranty on the glow plugs for the 2017's? Mine are constantly failing.

I believe it is the controller failure… GM must know. Replacing the injectors should also cover a TSB

Although I don't own the truck anymore, I just received a letter from GM yesterday alerting me to an extended warranty for glow plug failures. Apparently it's now up to 15/150,000. 15 years is a little shocking. What's this all about? I searched but didn't find anything on it. Of course, it doesn't mean much to me, just curious, but some information might help some current owners.

I have a 2012 GMC 2500 HD diesel with 69,800 miles on it (I don't go many places very far away). I bought this truck used in 2015. Glow plugs started failing on my truck very early. I'm a do-it-yourself guy and after going to the local parts store to have them put their meter on the truck I learned my "check engine" light was telling me a glow plug circuit had failed. I took the easiest route and bought a new plug from them and went home and went to work. Removing the wheel well plastic cover is the toughest part of the job. Once that's out you have pretty easy access to the glow plugs. I had changed at least three plugs in a very short period of time when I had a failure of the diesel exhaust fluid reservoir.

The shop I go to for GM cars told me the tank heaters fail when the weather changes to cold but he thought there was a factory warranty that covered that repair. He called the local dealership for me and learned the tank assembly was covered for replacement at no cost to me under a special factory warranty. The dealership gladly replaced my defective unit and also informed me there was an extended factory warranty on the glow plugs, as well as several other items.

At this point I've had all 8 glow plugs fail and several of them have failed two or three times, but I was able to have the dealer change them until I exceeded the 10 year time limit. The warranty on my truck was 10 years and 120,000 miles. I had never heard of such a thing. Plus, I was getting real good at changing them myself by the time I learned of the warranty.

So my advice to anyone with a vehicle like ours; go to a dealer and ask the maintenance manager to look up any information he has regarding special long term factory warranties on your truck. It is no skin off the dealer because it's all paid for by the factory, so don't be afraid to ask. My dealership, namely, Future Chevrolet of Sacramento, was more than happy to help me.
