What are the thoughts on the recommended 0w-20 oil for this motor? Seems awfully thin to me, but I'm no expert or engineer.

Is it to get the MPG's but will wear early or will this be good for long term?

When doing a journal bearing design, the viscosity and flow rate of the oil is part of the design package.
And of course so is clearance, width, diameter....

It's also a specific oil spec, DexosD, which currently only have 2 approved/licenced oils.

https://www.gmdexos.com/brands/dexosd/index.html

Brand Name......................Supplier....................Specification.......Viscosity....License Number.....Region
ACDelco Light Duty Diesel...General Motors...........dexosD™...........0W-20......DD0751IA015........Global
Mobil Super 3000 XE2.........ExxonMobil Oil Corp....dexosD™...........0W-20......DD0752IA015........Global

This is NOT the same oil as recommended for a 6.6L.

Thanks!

I already contacted Mobil a couple of weeks ago.

So the oil should be a non issue in the long term?

From Mobil:

Yes, Mobil 1 ESP X2 0W-20 is licensed by GM under DexosD, but you can thank Porsche for the availability of the product on the US market. We originally made it available her to cover the Porsche C20 spec in just two models back in late 2017. We're now seeing more call for this oil by Volkswagen and Audi under VW 508 00 and VW 509 00 specs, and Jaguar/Land Rover under their STJLR.51.5122 specification. Mercedes seems a little late to the 0W-20 market, but we're prepared to cover their MB 229.71 spec when they finally do. This oil has the potential to become the most common of my Mobil 1 ESP oils.

The published DexosD approval list is a little out of date, but I can save you a wild goose chase for Mobil Super 3000. This is a Canadian market product for the moment, and we don't expect to see it here. It is being rebranded soon as Mobil Super Synthetic, but I don't know that we expect to get the DexosD approved version in the US.

I hope this helps

I don't know where to get it other than just trying to order it from somewhere. I plan to start inquiring around about ordering some. My first stop was going to be O'Reilly's. I don't need it since I just put an order in for the Duramax, so I'm probably a couple months out before it even gets delivered... I just don't want to be looking for it and not be able to find something when the truck needs to be changed.

That is not dexosD certified and looks like it contains extra detergent that won't be good for the emissions system.

I have been getting the mobile 1 esp x2 oil at summit and another online performance shops. My dealer is now stocking the to dexosD since I pointed it out and they talked to GM.

The GM tech stated that it probably isn't critical in the first 15,000 miles b cause of all the contamination from manufacturing, but should be used for the long run.

I will be picking up some GM dexosD on Monday and will be interested to see if it is the same as the mobile 1.

Run DexosD complaint oil in the LM2. The life expectancy of that big “can” hanging off the turbo, depends on it, amongst other things. GM dealers have access to bulletin #19-NA-180 covers the special engine oil needs for this engine, at the dealership level.

I now have the two oils that are formulated for this engine and enough to last me a few years.

I thought maybe the Delco would just be repackaged Mobil, but they are definitely different. The Mobil esp smells like fresh asphalt. The Delco dexosD smells more like regular oil with just a hint of asphalt smell.

I think I am going to stick with Delco for at least the first 30,000 miles, then I may try the mobil1.

I was going to post pictures, but this site has some issues.

The back of the Mobile ESP X2 Notice the dexosD cert isn't listed on the label. However, Mobil lists it as being dexosD "licensed" on their website.

So I will copy a post that I made on another site here. Funny most of what I found out yesterday is confirmed by a post earlier on this thread by Mobil. I do list a few more details that should help with making it easier to find the correct oil.
So I have done lots of research on this and I think I have closed the loop on this. The required oil for my 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 3.0 liter Diesel is DexosD 0W-20. So there are two oils currently listed by Dexos that are DexosD: AcDelco light duty diesel and Mobil Super 3000 XE2. The AcDelco is of course available from the dealer but as you may have heard, they are not always using the correct oil and/or it is on back stock. The Mobil Super 3000 seemed like the right choice, but I could only find it on ebay for $74/qt. I did stumble upon Mobil One ESP X2 mentioned in forums that was supposed to be DexrosD certified and I found it at SummitRacing.com for $10/qt. I went ahead and ordered some and inspected it once it arrived. Nowhere on the label does it mention it was DexrosD certified so I called Mobil One (never have before but highly recommend it, they are super helpful). Marcos (Mobil 1 CSR) explained to me that Super 3000 XE2 is only available in Canada, so that explains the rarity of finding it. He did confirm that ESP X2 (Mobil One Part # 125386) is the correct DexosD certified oil, but here is where it gets interesting. The oil I received from Summit and the one currently being sold from NAPA (yes I actually found some on a shelf locally) were labeled and branded as ESP X2 and were correct part numbers, but the branding label and color scheme (DexosD Certification) doesn't match what Mobil one has on their website. After sending pictures back and forth and confirming Part Numbers they discovered that what was being sold now was produced in 2017 in Louisiana specifically for high end European cars in the USA. Of course the oil is the same make up and it is truly DexosD Oil, but it was just bottled before DexoD certification was a thing. These come with Green caps, and the labels do not mention DexosD, the new ones are supposed to list DexosD and have orange in the branding color scheme. Both will have part # 125386 on the box of 6. These are only sold in quarts. To summarize, I was informed by Mobil 1 that ESP X2 0w-20 Part # 125386 was the correct DexosD oil for my 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 3.0 Liter Diesel. I found it at Summitracing.com and NAPA (website and locally on the shelf). Of course your Truck your liability, so feel free to call Mobil 1 at 1 800-662-4525. Hope this helps.

I’ll admit I didn’t read all of that but from what I understand mobile 1 makes the ac delco dexosd oil. The reason only 2 are listed is because they paid the licensing fee.

The ESP is the correct mobile 1 oil but might as well use the AC Delco as it’s the same, at dealers and cheaper.

I’ll be running Amsoil.

I have confidence they will because when I took mine in for the first one they drained the oil then realized they didn’t have any on hand. Of course this was a Saturday morning so I got a loaner until Monday. The kicker was I gave them my vin a week before so they’d have the right oil.

Hopefully you have drained it out and put in the proper oil spec as step 1?

There is no way of knowing what/if any real/lasting damage was done; it would likely take a ton of miles/years before a problem arose due to it anyway.

I wouldn't worry about it to be honest; they are at least both 20 weights, and Ultra is premium stuff. It definitely protected your bearings, more SAPs then what is recommended but it was very temporary run.

I assume the engine sounded normal running it? How did you randomly come to know it was an issue, this thread or?

I don't post much here anymore due to the LM2 bashing and other BS from members but with owning 4 Duramax trucks oil and filters are a huge money item. The oil & filter prices I see listed in this thread are high so I thought I'd pass this along.

LM2 Oil: ACDELCO 109277 dexos Diesel; SAE OW-20; dexosD; Full Synthetic oil can be had at RockAuto shipped including tax for about $5.50 a quart for 24 quarts or more. AC PF66 filters are around 5 bucks shipped each. I can't find anyone to get near these prices.

I'm pretty sure within a year or so there will be more DexosD oil and filters on the market. Just like tires, the choices will increase as more of them get on the road and demand rises...
We can survive a year with OEM till then....

IDK, this truck has been out for far longer than 1 year, and there should be other options by now. They're already on their third model year for the 3.0. GM just doesn't want to share the customer's business. There are two DexosD oils but GM only lists 0W20. The other is 5W30 which has a higher HTHS rating. Amazingly enough, the stock 5W30 Dexos2 for the Colorado looks like it meets the DexosD rating. The Amsoil Syntheitc Diesel 5W30 oil covers both the Dexos2 and DexosD ratings (per Amsoil). Since the 2.8 had two oils (5W30 and 5W40, which I used during the summer for towing without issue), I'm really leaning toward replacing the 0W20 with the 5W30 Dexos2, even if it's only for a few months.

Seems like the right place to ask this question. Long story short, I went to get my oil changed for my 2021 3L I6 Silverado Duramax and they emptied the oil and then realized that they did not have the right DexosD approved oil. They did however have the Valvoline European Full Synthetic 0W20 for Gas and Diesel engines. I have tried hard to find a difference between this oil and the Mobil Super 3000 XE2 oil that is "DexoD Approved" and they seem to be made and approved for all of the exact same things except the Valvoline does not have the DexosD tag on it. Question I have is this, should I get another oil change or am I fine? Here is the link to the Valvoline oil they used. Again, the back of this quart and the Mobil 1 quart are saying the exact same things in terms of certifications! Hate to waste money but happy to do it if my new truck is in danger.

It may be just me, but before I'd turn the keys of this vehicle over to anyone for an oil change, we would assure that all correct materials were available and well aware of proper use before commencing...Personally I'm going to put my kit from amazon in the back seat when I go in for my free change as a backup. I also check the level and the receipt against GM correct oil and filter part # in the lot before ever leaving. Simple things that confirm and fix all issues.....

I think GM hired Mechanical and Fluid Engineers to determine what grade and weight of oil should be in yoru engine. I would never deign to second guess them in their area of expertise.

Just my .02

Worth knowing…Just bought three 6 qt boxes of Mobil 1 0w-20 ESP X2 which is Dexos D approved for less than 8.00 a qt from Summit Racing. Doubt if it can be bought much cheaper than that. The price of this oil will only go up….may want to stock up!
