Hello,

I'm using Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 in summer, 0w30 in winter. No issues....
if you are not using green cap ESP X2 you are doing your DPF a disservice. But you are welcome to use what you like….

The only oils approved to dexosD are 0W20

current list:

ACDelco Light Duty Diesel General Motors dexosD™ 0W-20 DD0751IA015
Castrol EDGE Turbo Diesel Castrol Ltd. dexosD™ 0W-20 DD55BCCI082
Mobil 1 ESP X2 ExxonMobil Oil Corp. dexosD™ 0W-20 DD40BCCB015
Mobil Super 3000 ExxonMobil Oil Corp. dexosD™ 0W-20 DD25BBBK015
Mobil Super 3000 XE2 ExxonMobil Oil Corp. dexosD™ 0W-20 DD0752IA015
REPSOL MASTER ECO Repsol dexosD™ 0W-20 DD25BADE102

There are MANY Mobil 1 products.
Only the ESP X2 meets DexosD (others may meet other Dexos specs)

Curious as to why you would say that. Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 Dexos2, while not recommended by GM, has the same sulfated ash (≤ 0.8 ) as the 0W-20 Dexos D but a higher HTHS at ≥ 3.5. The new Mobil 1 ESP X2 Dexos D doesn't have either listed on the Mobil website yet GM only calls for ≤0.8 SA and a HTHS of ≥ 2.6 in our trucks. At the same SA rating, I don't think it is hurting the DPF. From what I've found, the Mobil 1 ESP D2 meets all the DexosD requirements and shares the same license. GM also has an approved 5W30 Dexos D oil but hasn't marketed it yet. Given the amount of towing I do, I'll lean to the side of caution on the engine vs the DPF at this time, especially between spring and fall.

Because if there was an oil related engine component failure (Or DPF Failure), the 1st thing they do in any "major" warranty claim is sample the oil to meet approved specs if its oil related. If it doesn't, they have an out in not approving your claim. But you are welcome to use what you like.

I'm glad you agree that I'm free to use what I like but that doesn't answer my question. Why is using an oil that is equal to or better than what is recommended (yes, my opinion) doing my DPF a disservice? That is what I was asking, not permission to use something different. So, I'll ask you, why does GM have a 5W-30 Dexos D that they are not marketing? Are they hedging their bets as Dodge did with the Ram mini diesels?

Three different sizes of duramaxes, and 3 different recommended oil specs.

There must be a reason,

(ya I know, the 2.8 just went out of production...so now there is 2...)

That's a shame about the 2.8. It was a good lil' engine. Had it's issues like every other engine but it packed a punch for it's small size. Would have liked to be able to have both it and the 3.0. If I hadn't have gone to a heavier boat, I'd probably still have it. I ran 5W-30 Dexos 2 in the winter and 5W-40 Dexos 2 in the summer in it for towing.

That's what confuses me about GM not marketing the 5w-30 Dexos D if they went through all the trouble of activating and approving it.

Question: If the cost is negligible , which oil would you run in your 3.0 Duramax.....Amsoil or the AC Delco brand? I've been using Amsoil in other vehicles for a while, but I want the best protection for my new Duramax. Also, how long would you run the factory oil until initial oil change?

That's a loaded question, correct answer is which ever one you choose, otherwise expect answers from mild to wild. It's your money. ;)

Change it 4-5k miles.

Mobil ESP X2 if you want to use the expensive oil. It’s $10/qt at autozone.

Amsoil is not a licensed DexosD oil, if that means anything to you.

I have ran both AC and Amsoil. I had been running AC till about 16k miles and have ran Amsoil till my last oil change at about 46k. I did switch back to the Ac Delco to mainly compare the difference in oil consumption with my motor. I ran the Amsoil about 6200 miles on the last change and was down maybe alittle more than a half quart. Not too concerning but wanted to see if there is a difference between the two oils since I have read a couple of posts stating they have noticed more consumption with the Amsoil. I did get my best MPG with Amsoil on my last oil change. The computer showed around 29 and typically I have noticed that the computer under rates about .2-.5 mpgs in my case when I had calculate. I have run blackstone oil analysis on both oils and there didn’t appear to be much difference for whatever that is worth. The TBN (wear additive left in oil) on the AC was actually a 1.2 points higher than the Amsoil but I did run the Amsoil for maybe another 400 miles more. I’ll report back when I do my next oil change to compare the oil consumption.

Also, just for the record, AC Delco and Mobil 1 are made in the same factory.... Delco is 5.64 a qt at Rock auto. Exceeds all standards and needs. Proven by analysis. What more is there to discuss?

Also for the record. They are NOT the same oil, made in the same factory or not.
You are correct... One is honey colored and one is green. Other than that..If they were analyzed, I bet they'd be within a hair of being the same makeup. I've used both.

Also @JGRaider All DexosD approved oils are synthetic. Amsoil is not on that list.
