the hardest part about doing mine last year was getting the connector off of the old one, I've never seen one that stuck..other than that it's a piece of cake, good luck!

Had this happen to me yesterday after sinking the front end about 15 inches into mud.

After we got it out, the tranny would shift into gear and was displaying the message. I put it back into 4 low then neutral, and back to 2 wheel. It has been fine ever since. I am thinking it had to do with the mud getting up into the tranny and moisture etc.. Dunno.

Need help as well .bought a Sterling rollback with a Allison transmission drove it home fine washed and detailed pulled it in the shop(no problems to this point)next day want go into Reverse or drive same "range" message any more ideas other than whats mentioned.
thanks

My 2003 2500HD Si GMC is doing the same thing to. As soon as i turn on my truck it read "Range Shift Inhibited". Im thinking it could be possibly some sand or something that got into the tranmission. Cause i just got back from the dunes and thats when it was doing it.

I went threw 2 NSBU switches with no help pulled code 0872 sensor c low something or other talked to a tech at an allison dealership he said it was my internal trans harness so i did that no help. So before i bite the bullet and took it to a tranny shop i took the chance on the ignition switch. WINNER WINNER she runs like a dream now except for the fact she blew a tire out on me this morning haha

i have the same problem but i thought it was becouse i park on a incline

I'm going throught the same thing. I have to shift to neutral and park a few times to get tranny to engage. Replaced NSBU a few months ago. WTF>>:??

Pirate,

Im telling you try the ignition switch the electric part not the cylinder it drove me crazy and I have not had a problem since I went threw 2 NSBU switches and got suckered into doing the internal trans harness with no luck but the switch was the golden ticket

So I took advice from tdmullins, Part was 50 bucks. took me about 10 minutes to install. Problem has dissapeared. Thanks so much mullins.

Sorry to reserect a old thread

Just experienced this today for the first time. Truck wouldnt go into reverse and had the range shift show up on the display. I shut it off and started it up again and worked fine. Drove down the street to the post office. Went to leave the post office and it went into gear but when i backed up it revved up and barely moved. Almost like it was slipping. Put it in drive and it did the same thing. Just slowly cruised out of the parking lot and moved it from D to 3 and it down shifted but still felt like it was slipping. Put it back into D then hit tow/haul and it downshifted but still felt like slipping. Took it out of tow/haul and it shifted and felt normal from there on out.

Still think it could be ignition switch or NSBU related?

I checked the tranny fluid for the heck of it and it was a ways over the hot full markings. And yesterday while driving around a 6'x12' uhaul open trailer a few hundred miles i started noticing that as the rpm went up in second gear a little over 2k it would drop down and couple hundred then continue to go back up and shift into third. I assumed it was something like the torque converter locking??? I could be way off on that. Its just something I noticed that i didnt think happened before. I was driving it through some hills but as lame as it sounds i had the cruise set at 55 the whole time just because highway patrol was everywhere and it had big stickers on it that said 55MPH so no excuse to not speed.

I hope its nothing bad I am suppose to go to pismo beach with my trailer on the 20th.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Give me some codes if you have a check engine light. You should have a scanner on it to check what is going on. Why did you not call me right away? Let's get this fixed. Call me anytime on my cell. 310 918 9678.

No check engine light and the stupid touch screen PDA with the banks kit went out a few weeks ago. So I can't see if it picked up codes. This just happened a few hours ago. Don't worry I will call you. I know your more than willing to help. You were great to us when you built the tranny for us. I do have another PDA on the way. It should be here soon. As soon as I get a code I will call you. Tranny fluid still nice and red though and doesn't smell burnt or anything.

service brake system, range shift inhibited 04 duramax

Have a 2004 duramax LLY, bought it not that long ago. Drove it other day to get haircut. It was misting out. WEnt to leave and the abs and brake light were on, the service brake system and range shift inhibited lights up on the message screen. I have already tried the ignition switch and did do anything. I then unplugged plug in on the neatural safety switch and it was clean and dry. Any1 have any clue.
